Swim teams conclude regular seasons at MIT, women's 200 medley relay team breaks school recordFebruary 3, 2007 CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up their 2006-07 regular seasons with several strong performances at the six-team Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational Saturday afternoon in Zesiger Pool. Highlighting the non-scoring meet was a school-record time during the women's 200-yard medley relay race, as the Lyons' quartet picked up the event win in 1:51.72. Juniors Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and freshmen Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) downed the two-year-old school mark by 1.78 seconds. Meehan and Sweatt also took top honors in their individual events, with Meehan winning the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.28 and Sweatt capturing the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.88. Meehan nipped her closest opponent by 0.02 seconds, while Sweatt defeated the runner up by 0.28 ticks. Pratt enjoyed a solid all-around day with a pair of second-place finishes while swimming a leg on Wheaton's third-place 200-yard freestyle relay team. Pratt was a mere 0.04 seconds off the mark in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.99, while her time of 2:15.71 in the 200-yard backstroke was her second runner-up placement. She sided with Meehan, Miller and freshman Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) in the 200-yard free relay. On the men's side, senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) met an NCAA national meet provisional qualifying standard in the 100-yard freestyle event, winning the competition in 46.35, which was 1.8 seconds faster than his closest competitor. Junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) placed third in the 100-yard backstroke race with a time of 53.84. Jordan and Roberts also joined senior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) and junior Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School) on the fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team. The Wheaton women have nearly two weeks away from competition before returning to the pool at Wellesley College for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on February 16-18. The Lyon men aren't back in action until the weekend after, as they'll host their second straight league championship in Balfour Natatorium. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
