Wheaton's Roberts tabbed with third ECAC weekly honor in four weeks

January 24, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's swimming and diving standout Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Co-Swimmer-of-the-Week honors for the week ending on Sunday, January 21. It marked the third time in the last four weeks of selections that Roberts drew the accolade, and the fourth straight week in which either a male or female Lyon nabbed an ECAC award. Roberts shared the award with Grove City College junior Caleb Courage.

Roberts, a senior All-American, picked up eight wins and two runner-up finishes in the 10 events he entered last week while notching two NCAA Championship provisional qualifying times and breaking a school record. He now owns four individual program marks and has been part of four relay teams that have set school standards. As of last Wednesday, Roberts held the top 50-yard freestyle (20.48) time in Division III this season while tying for the third-best 100 free (45.30) showing.

At Bridgewater State College on Wednesday, Roberts notched three individual wins and swam for two victorious relay teams. He won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.90 by 7.61 seconds over the next swimmer, the 200-yard free in 1:50.72 by 15.87, and the 500-yard free in 5:15.47 by 47.97. During relays, Roberts helped the 200-yard medley quartet finish in a time of 1:46.88 before pushing the 400-yard free foursome to a 3:41.54 showing.

On Saturday at Division II Bentley College, Roberts broke the school's 50-yard butterfly record by 0.56 seconds with a first-place finish of 23.86. He also won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in 21.01 and 46.55, respectively, as each provisionally qualified him for the NCAA meet. Roberts also helped the 200-yard free and medley quartets to runner-up finishes.

Wheaton has posted a 5-9 record thus far, as the Lyons have a double-dual meet at Tufts University this weekend and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational on February 3 remaining before the Blue and White hosts the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on February 23-25 in Balfour Natatorium.
