Wheaton women's swimming and diving ties school wins mark, Roberts and Tokcan push Lyon men to victory at Bridgewater State

January 17, 2007

BRIDGEWATER, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up victories over local foe Bridgewater State College on Wednesday in the Moriarty Pool. The 12-3 Blue and White women tied last year's program wins mark behind a 164-126 triumph, and the Lyon men, now 5-8, won by a 123-95 decision. Bridgewater State's women fell to 5-4 and its men to 1-6.

Junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) paced Wheaton's women with two individual victories, as she won the 50-yard backstroke in 28.84 and 50-yard butterfly in 27.38, outdistancing her closest competitor by 2.31 and 4.52 seconds, respectively. Her school-record 50 fly time was 0.12 ticks better than the program mark she set last January, while her 50 back showing was 0.15 seconds shy of a four-year-old Wheaton standard.

Five additional Lyons won events, with senior Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.57 and classmate Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) pacing the 50-yard breast field in 34.33. Junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.02, freshman Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) captured the 500-yard free title in 5:48.09, and first-year Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) notched a 400-yard individual medley triumph in 4:59.18.

The Blue and White also won the 200-yard medley relay race in 1:58.05, as Behrens, Meehan, sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshman Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) combined for the victory.

A quintet of men's swimmers combined for 13 event victories, with senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) and junior Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School) playing a hand in five apiece. Senior co-captain Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) and junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) were part of four wins each.

Roberts took home the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle crowns, each by comfortable margins. He won the 100 free in 47.90, which was 7.61 seconds ahead of the next finisher, the 200 free in 1:50.72 by 15.87 ticks, and the 500 free in 5:15.47 by 47.97 seconds. Tokcan's biggest margin of victory came in the 100-yard breaststroke, which he won in 1:13.49 by 5.27 seconds over his closest competitor. He also captured 50-yard breast and free wins.

Hicks showed his versatility by winning the 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard individual medley and 1,000-yard freestyle events in times of 1:02.12, 4:47.80 and 11:17.44, respectively, while Jordan picked up wins in the 50-yard back in 26.30 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.12. During relays, Hicks, Jordan, Roberts and Tokcan won the 200-yard medley in 1:46.88 before Jordan, Roberts, Tokcan and freshman John Ahern (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) corralled the 400-yard free competition in 3:41.54.
