Men's and women's swimming and diving teams suffer first losses

November 10, 2006

NORTON, MA- In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving squads each suffered their first loss of the season to New York University on Friday in Balfour Natatorium. The Violets took the men's meet, 128-85, while their women won by a 123-111 final. Both Lyon teams fell to 3-1, while each NYU squad improved to 4-0.

Junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) highlighted the women's meet for Wheaton, winning each the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races while swimming a leg for the victorious 200-yard medley relay quartet. Her time of 24.80 in the 50-yard free was nearly a full second better than the second-place finisher and was just 0.21 ticks off her school record. In the 100-yard free, Pratt took first in 54.73, outdistancing the runner up by 2.34 seconds.

During the relay, Pratt joined junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshmen Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) to win in 1:53.98 and come within 0.48 seconds of matching a school record.

Wheaton's 200-yard freestyle relay team notched a victory in 1:46.75. In a quartet comprised solely of underclassmen, sophomores Mandy Cumings (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) and Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshmen Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) combined to finish 0.08 ticks ahead of a second-place foursome from New York University.

A trio of Lyons turned in runner-up finishes, including Sweatt in the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Laura Fleck (Auburn, ME/Hebron Academy) in the one-meter dive and sophomore Stacy Zickl (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) in the three-meter dive.

Senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) and junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) each won a men's race, as Roberts completed the 50-yard freestyle in 21.42, while Jordan paced the 100-yard backstroke field in 53.78.

Junior Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) turned in second-place showings in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events, while freshman Max Polin (Parkland, FL/North Broward School) finished second twice in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. In the 200-yard medley relay, Jordan, Polin and Roberts joined with senior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) on a runner-up placement.

Both Wheaton squads return to action tomorrow when they host New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Babson College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in a double-dual meet at 1:00 p.m.
