Swimming and diving teams each place third at Batterman RelaysNovember 4, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each placed third out of four teams as they hosted the Charlie Batterman Relays on Saturday at Balfour Natatorium. Wheaton's women notched 100 points, placing just eight points behind second place Tufts University. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) pulled away for the win with 132 points, while Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) finished fourth with 66 points. On the men's side, the Lyons recorded 66 points to finish just ahead of WPI's 60. MIT totaled 154 points to capture first, while Tufts had 84. A pair of women's relay teams notched victories, and junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and freshman Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) each played a hand in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard medley quartets' wins. The duo joined sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshman Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) as the 200 backstroke team won in a time of 1:55.93. Meehan, Pratt, junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) paced the 200 medley field in 1:54.45. Four relays teams earned runner-up finishes for the Lyons. Meehan, Miller and Pratt teamed with freshman Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) to finish the 200-yard freestyle relay just 0.04 seconds out of first, while Meehan and Pratt joined freshmen Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and Amy Dalrymple (Surry, ME/Ellsworth) in the 200-yard butterfly foursome. Conelias, Sweatt, senior Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and sophomore Mandy Cumings (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) raced on the 400-yard individual medley relay, while Bohn, Sweatt, senior Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and sophomore Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay) joined forced for the 200-yard breaststroke quartet. Five of Wheaton's men's teams finished among the top three, as the 200-yard freestyle relay squad had the only second-place showing. Senior Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering), junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth), sophomore T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) and freshman Max Polin (Deerfield Beach, FL/North Broward School) finished less than two seconds out of first place.
