October 28, 2006

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams cruised to season-opening victories against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Clark University and non-league foe Gordon College during Saturday afternoon's double-dual meet at Balfour Natatorium.

The Wheaton men rolled past Gordon, 176-40 while defeating Clark, 155-122, and the Lyon women upended the Fighting Scots, 194-55 before knocking off the Cougars, 158-132. Clark salvaged a split with a 224-23 men's win and 212-58 triumph on the women's side.

For the Wheaton men, senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) and junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) were the day's lone triple-winners, as Roberts bested the competition in the 50- and 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly events, and Jordan was victorious in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley races.

Junior Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) captured multiple-event wins in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events, as did sophomore T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard free. Freshman Max Polin (Deerfield Beach, FL/North Broward School) posted his first collegiate victory in the 200-yard butterfly event, while classmate Mike Koltz (Columbia, MD/Boys' Latin School of Maryland) made his collegiate debut with a win in the one-meter dive.

The Lyons also secured victories in both relay events, with Patch, Roberts, Sponzo and junior Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School) winning the 200-yard freestyle relay and Jordan, Patch, Polin and Sponzo victorious in the 200-yard medley relay.

On the women's side, junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) topped the competition in the 50- and 200-yard freestyle events, while five other Lyons collected individual swim-event wins. Seniors Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) won the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly events, respectively, while junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) finished first in the 100-yard freestyle.

First-year swimmers Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) made an impact in their first collegiate starts, winning the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke events, respectively. On the platform, sophomore Stacy Zickl (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) swept the one- and three-meter diving events in her collegiate debut.

Wheaton also captured both relay events, as sophomore Mandy Cumings (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) played a hand in each the 200-yard freestyle and medley relay races. Cumings anchored each, joining senior Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and freshmen Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) on the freestyle foursome and Conelias, Sweatt and sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) on the medley quartet.
