Roberts completes third national championship visit with pair of NCAA All-America honorable mentionsMarch 18, 2006
Hosted by Carleton College and held at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center, the three-day meet was the third successive national championship for Roberts, who tallied 13 points in a pair of freestyle events. Wheaton's only swimmer to have earned NCAA All-America laurels in the program's 15-year history, Roberts kicked off the championship in strong fashion with a 10th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle event. Missing his school mark by a mere 0.02 seconds, Roberts turned in a time of 20.73 during Thursday's finals competition. On Friday, Roberts broke his own school mark in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing 25th overall in 1:43.38. His time was 2.04 seconds faster than his original 2005 mark. Similar to Thursday, Roberts capped off his weekend by qualifying for the consolation final of Saturday's 100-yard freestyle event. Taking 11th overall in 45.86, he finished 0.34 seconds off his Wheaton record. Advancing to the national championship after picking up NEWMAC Men's Swimmer-of-the-Year honors in late February, Roberts won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events while leading the 200-yard medley relay team to victory. He garnered NEWMAC All-Conference first team honors in each of the three events. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/21/07. |
