Roberts named Wheaton's first NEWMAC Men's Swimmer of the YearFebruary 28, 2006 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College junior Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Swimmer-of-the-Year honors on Tuesday, the first such award for a Wheaton swimming and diving athlete. Roberts made three trips to the awards podium during the NEWMAC Championship last weekend at Wheaton's Balfour Natatorium, as the co-captain won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and led the 200-yard medley relay team to victory, earning him three all-conference first team honors. During the meet, Roberts played a hand in six school records, four NCAA Division III Championship qualifying times and a pair of NEWMAC Championship marks. In the 100-yard freestyle, Roberts first broke the meet record, his own school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship during the trials before picking up a finals victory. Roberts' automatic qualifying time was the first in program history for a Wheaton swimmer. He also twice eclipsed his own 50-yard free mark while provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet and breaking his own NEWMAC Championship record. Roberts swam on four record-breaking relay teams, including the winning 200-yard medley relay quartet and the 200-yard free relay foursome, each of which provisionally qualified for the NCAAs. He also guided the 400-yard free and 400-yard medley teams to program standards. Roberts completed the opening leg of the 200-yard free relay while serving as the anchor for the remaining three teams. During the regular season, Roberts led the Lyons to an 11-3 dual mark and a program record for wins. Of the 40 events he entered during dual meets, Roberts won 35 and finished second four times. An All-American at last year's national championship meet, Roberts continues his season at the NCAA Division III Championship at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on March 16-18.
