Coast Guard captures fourth NEWMAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship in conference's eight-year historyFebruary 26, 2006 NORTON, MA- The United States Coast Guard Academy captured its fourth New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Sunday evening at Wheaton College's Balfour Natatorium, as the Bears led the three-day meet from start to finish for a total of 908 points. Coast Guard's win also put the program in the conference lead for most NEWMAC swimming and diving championships, ahead of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) three titles. 2005 winner Springfield College finished as this year's runner-up with 798 points and MIT came in third with 784.5. Junior Ryan Caple (Littleton, CO) and sophomore Bobby Brown (Ballston Lake, NY) wrapped up an outstanding weekend for the victors, as the tandem combined for 11 NEWMAC All-Conference first team honors. Caple was victorious in tonight's 200-yard breaststroke, his third individual-event win of the meet, with an NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying standard and championship meet record of 2:06.35. Brown secured his third individual victory of the weekend with the meet's fastest time in the 1650-yard freestyle race, automatically qualifying for the national championship in 15:52.95. Springfield senior Mike Shaw (Westfield, MA) concluded his illustrious NEWMAC career by sweeping both the one- and three-meter diving championships for a total of eight titles off the platform. Shaw followed Friday's one-meter championship with an automatic qualifier in tonight's three-meter competition. Shaw tallied 521.55 points, while sophomore teammate Ben Casavant (Acton, MA) also reached an automatic standard with 467.00 points. MIT's Matthieu Fuzellier (Bouffemont, France/Lycee Notre Dame de Bury) swept the backstroke events with the top mark in the 200-yard back, as the senior all-conference performer notched a provisional qualifying time of 1:52.13. Wheaton junior Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) tacked on another freestyle win, this time in the 100-yard race with a provisional time of 45.87. Roberts exploded to a 45.52 finish during the trials, good for an NCAA automatic qualifying time, conference meet record and Wheaton school mark. Rounding out this evening's event wins were Springfield senior Daniel Moran (Wilbraham, MA) in the 200-yard butterfly and MIT's 400-yard freestyle relay team comprised of Fuzellier, seniors Josiah Rosmarin (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Christian) and Grady Snyder (Goleta, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy) and freshman Peter Wellings (Palm Harbor, FL/Palm Harbor University) with a NEWMAC Championship record time of 3:05.85 Other NCAA provisional records included Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) sophomore Jeff Meyer (Denver, CO/Ramstein American) in the 1650-yard freestyle; Snyder and Springfield sophomore Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) in the 100-yard free; MIT junior Matt Angle (Shreveport, LA/Caddo Magnet) in the 200-yard breaststroke; Moran and Coast Guard sophomore Doug Fallon (Elkton, MD) in the 200-yard butterfly; and 400-yard freestyle relay teams from Coast Guard and Springfield.
