Four victories propels Coast Guard to day-one lead at NEWMAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship

February 24, 2006

NORTON, MA- The United States Coast Guard Academy picked up four event victories on Friday to capture the lead after day one of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship at Wheaton College's Balfour Natatorium. Coast Guard has 292 points, Springfield College is in second with 263, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) rounds out the top three with 247.5. The competition resumes Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and culminates on Sunday.

Coast Guard sophomore Bobby Brown (Ballston Lake, NY) played a hand in three of his team's victories, including the top showing in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying time after missing out on an automatic berth during the trials by 0.01 seconds. Brown broke his own conference meet record in the 500-yard free and helped a pair of relay teams to NCAA provisional times, siding with juniors Ryan Caple (Littleton, CO) and Colby Schlaht (Anaheim, CA) and freshman Jim Okorn (Euclid, OH) for a 200-yard free relay victory before teaming with Caple, Schlaht and sophomore Jack Shadwick (Campbell Hall, NY) during the 400-yard medley relay. Caple notched another Coast Guard win in the 200-yard individual medley, while Schlaht earned a second-place finish before sophomore teammate Doug Fallon (Elkton, MD) came in third.

One other NEWMAC Championship meet record fell on Friday, as Wheaton junior Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) eclipsed his own 50-yard freestyle mark during both the trials and finals heats. Roberts took first in the event while he, Springfield sophomore Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) and MIT senior Grady Snyder (Goleta, CA/Philips Exeter Academy) each met NCAA provisional qualifying status in the 50-yard free.

Springfield senior Mike Shaw (Westfield, MA) paced the one-meter diving contingent for the fourth straight season and met automatic qualification for the NCAA Championship. The Pride also came up with a trio of second-place showings by senior Daniel Moran (Wilbraham, MA) in the 500-yard freestyle, Burch in the 50-yard free and sophomore Ben Casavant (Acton, MA) in the one-meter dive.

Other NCAA provisional marks came from Moran in the 500-yard freestyle; by 200-yard free relay quartets from MIT, Springfield and Wheaton; and by MIT and Springfield during the 400-yard medley relay.
