Roberts notches three wins for the Lyons at Middlebury InvitationalFebruary 4, 2006 MIDDLEBURY, VT- Junior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) was part of three victories, reaching an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark and set a pool record during the Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams' competition at the Middlebury Invitational on Saturday. The meet marked the Lyons' final event of the regular season. Roberts won the 50-yard freestyle in a pool-record time of 21.23, reaching an NCAA provisional mark, and came within 0.43 seconds of his own school record. He also took first in the 100-yard free in 47.22, just 0.44 ticks off an NCAA provisional time, while siding with junior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area), sophomore Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and freshman Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans) for a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Jordan also turned in a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Hurley placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke, just 0.17 seconds behind the event's victor, and came up with a fourth-place showing during the 200-yard breast. Junior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) rounded out Wheaton's top-10 finishes by completing the 400-yard individual medley in sixth and the 200-yard back in eighth. For the women, sophomore Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) recorded five top-10 finishes, including a tie for first in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.19, just 0.25 seconds off her own school record. Pratt tied a Division I athlete for the top spot, and finishers from Division I schools occupied each of the next five places. During the 100-yard free, Pratt finished sixth in 54.95, merely 0.35 seconds off her school mark and 0.67 seconds behind the top swimmer, and she was ninth in the 100-yard butterfly. Pratt also sided with senior Courtney Catalano (Westford, MA/Westford Academy), sophomore Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) for a sixth-place showing among 200-yard medley teams. Pratt then joined Glover, Miller and junior Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) for an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, just 3.13 seconds behind the winning quartet. Glover also came up with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke and 10th-place showing in the 100-yard back. Bohn came within 1.33 seconds of her school record while finishing seventh during the 100-yard breaststroke and placed ninth among 200-yard breast competitors. Freshman Casey Shanley (Rumson, NJ/Suffield Academy) swam into 10th during the 500-yard freestyle competition. The Lyons now begin preparations for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, as the women are slated to compete at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on February 17-19, while the men will host the three-day meet on February 24-26.
