Wheaton men's and women's swimming each remain perfect with wins over Bridgewater State

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each moved to 6-0 by downing Bridgewater State College on Friday evening at Balfour Natatorium. The Lyon men won, 116.5-76.5, while the Blue and White women were victorious, 133-100.

Wheaton's men won all 11 swimming events and broke 100 points for the sixth time in as many dual meets, as senior John Kuckens (West Hartford, CT/Hall) and junior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) won two events apiece. Kuckens turned in top times with 1:54.25 in the 200-yard freestyle and 5:18.47 for the 500-yard free, while Roberts displayed his versatility by finishing the 50-yard free in 22.00 and the 100-yard backstroke at 59.26.

Five additional Lyon swimmers won events. Junior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.80, sophomore Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) paced the 100-yard freestyle field with a time of 50.03, and second-year swimmer Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) took first in the 1000-yard free in 11:03.27. Freshman Jake Maher (Newtown, CT/Newtown) finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.84 and first-year athlete Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans) had a time of 58.83 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Wheaton corralled a pair of relay victories, as Maher and Romilly contributed to each win. The duo joined Jordan and Patch in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 1:36.12, while Maher, Romilly, Kuckens and freshman T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) swam the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.05.

The Lyon women claimed victories in seven swimming events, as sophomore Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) picked up a pair of wins. Pratt turned in times of 1:03.40 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:19.91 in the 200-yard individual medley. Three more Blue and White swimmers notched wins, as junior Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) completed the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.45, freshman Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay) swam the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.66 and first-year competitor Casey Shanley (Rumson, NJ/Suffield Academy) finished the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.85.

Smith also lifted a pair of relay teams to top finishes, first combining with Grant, senior Courtney Catalano (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and freshman Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) to swim the 200-yard medley relay in 2:01.40. During the 200-yard freestyle relay, Catalano, Smith, senior Lauren Pcholinski (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) and sophomore Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) won in 1:47.78.

The Wheaton swimming and diving teams return to action tomorrow at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College at 1:00 p.m.
