Wheaton cruises to two additional wins at conference foe Clark

November 11, 2005

WORCESTER, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams had little difficulty improving their overall records to 3-0, as the Lyons topped New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Clark University in Worcester. The Wheaton men collected a 118-110 victory while the women won, 122-110.

Junior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) highlighted the night with a trio of victories in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events and 100-yard breaststroke. Junior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) secured event wins in the 50- and 100-yard free, while sophomores Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue) and Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) brought home two wins each.

Fowler captured top times in the 200-yard individual medley and 1,000-yard freestyle events, and Jordan was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. Jordan also sided with freshmen Jake Maher (Newtown, CT/Newtown), Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans) and T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) to win the 200-yard medley relay. Roberts and Sponzo joined senior John Kuckens (West Hartford, CT/Hall) and sophomore Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.

The women had similar success, as three of their swimmers accounted for multiple-event triumphs. Sophomore Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and first-year swimmers Mandy Cumings (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) and Casey Shanley (Rumson, NJ/Suffield Academy) each won two events. Miller earned the fastest times in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, Cumings in the 500-yard free and 200-yard individual medley and Shanley in the 200- and 1,000-yard free events.

Also earning wins were junior Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) in the 100-yard butterfly and sophomore Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) in the 100-yard backstroke. For the top relays, Miller, Smith and freshmen Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay) were a part of the 200-yard medley, while Smith, seniors Courtney Catalano (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and Lauren Pcholinski (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) and sophomore Melinda Labranche (Dorchester, MA/John D. O'Bryant School) comprised the 200-yard free foursome.

The Lyons will host their second double-dual meet of the season tomorrow afternoon, welcoming conference schools Babson College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to Balfour Natatorium for a 1:00 p.m. start.
