Roberts becomes Wheaton's first NCAA Division III All-America swimmer in program history

March 17, 2005

HOLLAND, MI- Sophomore standout Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) made school history at the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championship Thursday, becoming Wheaton College's first swimmer in the progam's 14-year history to garner All-America accolades at a national meet.

Qualifying for his second straight national championship, Roberts earned his All-America honors in the 50-yard freestyle event at Hope College's Holland Community Aquatics Center. Roberts is the school's only swimmer to have attended a national championship. He swam the second-fastest time in the preliminaries among a field of 56 finishers and later tied for fifth in the championship final. Roberts' time of 20.81 was a mere hundredth of a second off his school record. He posted a finish of 20.98 in the finals.

Advancing to the national championship after winning the 50-yard free at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship in February, Roberts was one of four sophomores in the championship and consolation finals and the only New England swimmer among the top 16 finishers.

Earning NEWMAC All-Conference honors in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, Roberts will compete in the 200-yard free at Hope on Friday and the 100-yard free on Saturday.
