January 12, 2005

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their successful seasons Wednesday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium, as the Lyons swept Brandeis University in a non-conference dual meet. The men posted a 146.50-124.50 win over the Judges, while the women were victorious by a count of 147-128.

The Wheaton men have already equaled last year's win total with an overall record of 5-3, while the women, tying the 2001-02 team's school record of eight victories in a season, are off to their most successful start in the 14-year history of the program with an 8-2 mark..

The women collected 10 individual victories and a pair of relay wins on the day, as senior Amanda Berthelette (Milford, NH/Milford), sophomore Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and freshmen Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) each captured multiple-event victories.

Berthelette posted the meet's fastest times in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 1:04.06 and 2:19.86, respectively, while Bohn swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events in 1:12.74 and 2:37.53, respectively. Berthelette, Bohn, senior co-captain Blake Worrall (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and sophomore Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) coasted to victory in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:17.88, which was nearly 15 seconds faster than the next closest relay. Worrall, Miller, Pratt and junior Lauren Pcholinski (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) also sided for the winning time in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:24.56. Rounding out the wins were Pcholinski in the 500-yard free in 5:38.00 and sophomore Katie McNicholas (Acton, MA/Acton Boxboro) in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:57.86. In addition to Wheaton's event wins, Smith finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a school-record time of 2:18.48.

Sophomore co-captain Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) was dominant in sweeping three freestyle events, including the 50-yard free in 21.96, the 100 free in 49.62 and the 200 free in 1:49.73. Senior Brendon Pohner (Agawam, MA/St. Mary's) and sophomore Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) were also multiple-event winners, as Pohner took the top marks in the one- and three-meter dives and Hurley won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke in 1:03.16 and 2:23.07, respectively.
