Wheaton swim teams sweep Brandeis in non-conference dual meetJanuary 12, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their successful seasons Wednesday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium, as the Lyons swept Brandeis University in a non-conference dual meet. The men posted a 146.50-124.50 win over the Judges, while the women were victorious by a count of 147-128. The Wheaton men have already equaled last year's win total with an overall record of 5-3, while the women, tying the 2001-02 team's school record of eight victories in a season, are off to their most successful start in the 14-year history of the program with an 8-2 mark.. The women collected 10 individual victories and a pair of relay wins on the day, as senior Amanda Berthelette (Milford, NH/Milford), sophomore Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and freshmen Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) each captured multiple-event victories. Berthelette posted the meet's fastest times in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 1:04.06 and 2:19.86, respectively, while Bohn swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events in 1:12.74 and 2:37.53, respectively. Miller and Pratt were equally impressive by combining for four wins, including three freestyle events. Miller won the 50-yard free in 25.96 and the 100 free in 56.21, while Pratt had the top performances in the 200 free in 2:04.63 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.78. Berthelette, Bohn, senior co-captain Blake Worrall (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and sophomore Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) coasted to victory in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:17.88, which was nearly 15 seconds faster than the next closest relay. Worrall, Miller, Pratt and junior Lauren Pcholinski (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) also sided for the winning time in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:24.56. Rounding out the wins were Pcholinski in the 500-yard free in 5:38.00 and sophomore Katie McNicholas (Acton, MA/Acton Boxboro) in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:57.86. In addition to Wheaton's event wins, Smith finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a school-record time of 2:18.48. For the men, the Lyons accounted for nine individual triumphs and one relay victory. Sophomore co-captain Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) was dominant in sweeping three freestyle events, including the 50-yard free in 21.96, the 100 free in 49.62 and the 200 free in 1:49.73. Senior Brendon Pohner (Agawam, MA/St. Mary's) and sophomore Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) were also multiple-event winners, as Pohner took the top marks in the one- and three-meter dives and Hurley won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke in 1:03.16 and 2:23.07, respectively. Senior co-captain Chris Klinkow (Hollis, NH/Hollis-Brookline) topped the field in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.13, while freshman Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) earned the fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.09. Klinkow and Jordan also swam a leg each on the school-record and winning 400-yard medley relay team with a time of 3:41.22, as the tandem was joined by Roberts and Hurley. The Lyons will next travel to Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, January 15 for a double-dual meet against Trinity College and Connecticut College at 12:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
