Nine different Lyons draw all-region women's soccer accoladesDecember 17, 2007 NORTON, MA- Nine total Wheaton College women's soccer players were named all-region by three organizations, as senior Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) were each on teams selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) and D3Kicks.com. Davis and senior Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) were each named to the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III All-New England first team, Alvarez and senior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) landed on the second team, and freshman Alessia Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) was a fourth teamer. Alvarez, Davis and Furr were chosen for the NEWISA Division III first team, while sophomores Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) and Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) and freshman Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) received third-team honors. Davis and Rabesa were selected to the D3Kicks.com All-New England first team, freshman Barrie Lindsay (Ipswich, MA/Waring School) made the second team, and Alvarez was a third-team pick. Nine Lyons drew accolades after a total of nine different Wheaton players received honors during the prior three seasons combined. Forty-four players landed on the NSCAA's four teams, as the Blue and White's five selections matched the 2001 squad for the most Wheaton players honored. NEWISA chose 41 for three teams, as at least six Lyons were honored for the third time in five years, while D3Kicks.com picked 33 players for three teams. Davis received the most votes in the NEWISA voting after anchoring a defense that yielded nine goals in 24 games and posted 16 shutouts. The tri-captain also contributed four goals, including three on penalty kicks, and 14 assists. Her helper total led the team, was second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and tied for third in program history. Davis also drew all-region honors following her junior year. As the only freshman on the top three NSCAA teams, and one of just two underclassmen on the NEWISA first squad, Alvarez joined Lindsay as one of only two first-year players to be selected to D3Kicks.com's trio of teams. She led the NEWMAC with 23 goals and nine game-winning markers and was second with 50 points. Alvarez's goal total, a program freshman record, is fourth in a single season at Wheaton, and she's fifth in points. Furr appeared in all 24 games in the midfield, making 19 starts, as she provided four goals and eight assists. A first-time all-region honoree, Furr is tied for ninth at Wheaton in career assists (30) and is 10th in points (68). Rabesa drew her initial all-region accolade following her only college season in the backfield, as the converted forward had nine goals and eight assists. Following her 98-game career, Rabesa is fifth at Wheaton in assists (35), tied for sixth in points (107) and is seventh in goals (36). Levy received her first athletic honor as a collegian after turning in strong midfield play with two goals and seven assists in 24 games, including 10 starts. Her lone game-winning goal came in a 1-0 win over Babson College. McManus also drew her initial college award following her second season as a contributor in the backfield. She scored six goals, including a pair during the NEWMAC Tournament title game, and turned in two assists during 22 games. McManus made 18 starts and netted a pair of game-winning markers. Hough was second on the squad in each goals (14), assists (12), points (40) and game-winning tallies (4) from her forward position, and she placed among the top five in the NEWMAC in each category. Lindsay scored four goals from the midfield while finishing third on the squad with nine assists, tying for fourth in the league. In her first year of college, Viscomi immediately joined the backfield mix, making a team-high 22 starts. She missed only one game and turned in two goals and three assists. Wheaton went 22-1-1 overall and 9-0 while winning its ninth consecutive NEWMAC regular season title and seventh postseason league crown in eight years. The Lyons advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth straight season and completed the year ranked 12th nationally by the NSCAA. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 7/31/08. |
