Freshman duo helps Wheaton hold off Wellesley, 3-2 in NEWMAC playOctober 6, 2007 WELLESLEY, MA- Freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) scored twice, and classmate Barrie Lindsay (Ipswich, MA/Waring School) assisted all three Wheaton College tallies as the nationally-ranked Lyons held on for a 3-2 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wellesley College on Saturday. The Lyons, who are ranked seventh nationally and first in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), improved to 12-0-1 overall and 4-0 in the league while extending their conference unbeaten streak to 80 games. Wellesley is now 5-5-1 and 1-3. Alvarez headed home Lindsay's cross in the 26th minute to give the Lyons an advantage, but Wellesley sophomore Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA/Belmont) tied the game at 39:07 off a helper from senior Jennifer Lau (Honolulu, HI/Punahou). Wheaton regained its edge with just five seconds remaining in the first half. Freshman Amanda Resendes (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) sent a ball to Lindsay, whose cross was headed into the net by senior Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) for her first goal this season. A little more than five minutes into the second half, Lindsay and freshman Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) sent Alvarez on a breakaway, and the striker buried her 13th goal of the season at 50:10. The marker eventually stood up as her fifth game-winner this year, as Lau picked up a giveaway in the Wheaton backfield and cut the Lyon lead to one goal at 58:20 for the final tally of the contest. Wheaton had not allowed multiple goals in a regular season NEWMAC game since October 18, 2005. The Lyons finished with advantages of 30-11 in shots and 12-0 in corner kicks. Senior Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) made three first-half saves, while classmate Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) stopped one shot during the second half and picked up the win. Sophomore Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA/The Potomac School) made 15 saves for the Blue. The Lyons next play on Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. contest against the United States Coast Guard Academy in Mirrione Stadium.
