Lyons run shutout streak to four with 5-0 blanking at Rhode Island College

September 13, 2007

PROVIDENCE, RI- Five different Wheaton College women's soccer players scored during the Lyons' third straight road game Thursday night at Rhode Island College, pushing the Blue and White to its fourth consecutive shutout with a 5-0 blanking of the Anchorwomen in non-conference action.

Wheaton, which is ranked 15th nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), remained unbeaten at 5-0-1 overall, while Rhode Island College falls to 1-2-1 on the season.

In addition to their balanced scoring on the offensive side of the field, the Lyons were stingy on the defensive half, running their scoreless stretch to over 430 minutes dating back to September 2. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) saw her initial action of the season, pitching her first career shutout with four saves.

Freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Loomis Chaffee School) added to her team-leading goal total with her sixth tally of the season in the 11th minute, as she planted her right-footed boot into the side netting and beyond the reach of junior goalie Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern). Senior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) made it a 2-0 game in the 29th minute, while freshman Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) headed in her third goal of the fall in the 42nd minute for a 3-0 halftime lead.

The visitors tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the second half, including freshman Barrie Lindsay (Ipswich, MA/Waring School) knocking home her first collegiate goal with just over 30 minutes remaining. Junior Bailey Edwards (Austin, TX/Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) completed the Wheaton scoring with a tally at 82:41. Rabesa recorded four points with a goal and two assists in the win.

The Lyons finished with advantages of 32-8 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks. Pyzynski was credited with eight stops in suffering the loss for the Anchorwomen.

Wheaton returns home on Sunday to face non-conference foe Husson College in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament game. Action at Mirrione Stadium is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
