Hough's tally sends Wheaton past Emmanuel, Leddy notches third shutoutSeptember 9, 2008 NORTON, MA- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team notched its third 1-0 victory of the season on Tuesday, as sophomore Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) buried her first goal of the year in the 21st minute for the only scoring against Emmanuel College in Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons, who are ranked 13th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), improved to 4-1, while the Saints fell to 2-2. Freshman Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) notched two saves for her third shutout in as many starts during her initial college campaign. Wheaton had the better of the chances during the opening half, as the Lyons totaled 20 of the 24 fired in the stanza en route to a 32-5 advantage for the contest, beginning when Hough sent a seventh-minute breakout pass to sophomore Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols), whose point-blank shot was smothered by senior keeper Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH/Dover). Two minutes later, Hough sent a header off the crossbar. During the 19th minute, Saint junior Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke) lofted a shot from 20 yards out toward net, and Leddy made her toughest save of the day by punching the ball over the goal frame. Shortly thereafter, Hough stole a pass near the Emmanuel box, ran toward the left side and rolled the ball into the right corner from 15 yards away at 20:58. The teams traded good opportunities in the second half, as Lyon sophomore Lauren Caney (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) sent a line drive from 20 yards out over the crossbar in the 74th minute before McKenna sent an arcing shot off the bar in the 85th minute. In addition to its shot advantage, Wheaton edged the Saints, 4-2 in corner kicks. Furtney finished with nine saves, including eight in the first stanza, for Emmanuel, which joined the Lyons as a qualifier for last season's NCAA Tournament. The Lyons continue a four-game homestand on Thursday when they host Rhode Island College for a 4:30 p.m. contest. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 9/9/08. |
