Landau and Carroll named to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team

November 7, 2007

NORTON, MA- Ten Wheaton College student-athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the fall of 2007. Student-athletes receiving the award must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2007 spring semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season. After providing a school-best-tying three honorees last fall, women's volleyball led all Wheaton programs with three this fall, while two teams had two athletes receive accolades.

Women's volleyball juniors Julia Dekermendjian (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) and Liana Merrill (Northwood, NH/Coe-Brown Northwood School) and sophomore Lauren Kraus (Westboro, MA/Westboro) nabbed academic citations. Dekermendjian qualified for the accolade for the second straight year, while her two teammates received their initial honors. Kraus led the Lyons in kills (353), hitting percentage (.224) and blocks (98). Merrill, a co-captain, missed only one match this year while notching 111 kills from her outside hitter position. Dekermendjian appeared in 25 matches and helped the Lyons go 22-13 overall, tying for the fifth-highest win total in program history.

Junior Jessie Landau (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) and sophomore Kathleen Carroll (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz Central) helped Wheaton's women's soccer team win its ninth straight NEWMAC regular season title and seventh tournament crown in eight years. The 21-0-1 Lyons also qualified for their eighth straight NCAA Tournament and begin play on Friday. Landau drew her second straight academic all-league honor and has made 17 appearances, including one start, in Wheaton's backfield. Carroll qualified for her initial accolade and has seen time in 15 games, including three starts, while providing one goal.

Both of the men's cross country team's captains landed on the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference squad, as junior Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and sophomore Miles Souza (Norton, MA/Saint Sebastian's School) received laurels. It was Hafferkamp's second honor and Souza's first. The duo helped Wheaton place fifth at the NEWMAC Championship on October 27.

Three of Wheaton's fall teams were each represented by one athlete. Sophomore Sarah Brand (Cincinnati, OH/Seven Hills School) of the women's cross country squad received her first honor in her first collegiate season after playing a part in Wheaton's runner-up finish at the NEWMAC Championship.

Field hockey senior Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford), a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic team honoree, corralled her third NEWMAC Academic All-Conference award. Ryalls has five goals and four assists this fall for the 13-6 Lyons, who advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinal before falling in overtime. Wheaton qualified for its second straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament and begins play this afternoon.

Senior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School), who has earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete accolades three times, drew her third academic all-conference honor. The Wheaton women's tennis team's lone captain went 10-5 in singles this fall while helping the Lyons go 8-5 overall and advance to the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament.

Fall sports sponsored by the NEWMAC include men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, women's tennis and women's volleyball.
