Wheaton's Davis picks up academic all-district nod for third straight year

November 2, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's soccer standout Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) earned an ESPN The Magazine Academic College Division All-District I honor for the third straight season, landing on the second team after receiving a third-team nod the previous two years. Qualifiers are selected to the teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The senior, a two-year captain, has started 17 of the 18 games in which she played this fall while helping Wheaton post a 19-0-1 overall mark heading into this weekend's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinals. Davis has been the anchor of a backfield that pushed the Lyons to 13 shutouts and a 0.39 goals against average. On the offensive side of the ball, Davis has contributed career highs of three goals, all on penalty kicks, and 10 assists. In her first three seasons, she totaled five goals and 18 helpers, and Davis is 10th in career assists (28) at Wheaton.

Thanks to a 9-0 league mark, the Lyons won their ninth consecutive NEWMAC regular season crown and take aim at their seventh tournament title this weekend. Wheaton is ranked seventh nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Blue and White carries an 86-game unbeaten streak against NEWMAC teams, the longest active undefeated run in conference play in NCAA soccer and the second longest in history.

Davis holds a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in Hispanic studies with a chemistry minor. A 2006 NSCAA All-America pick, she has been a resident adviser and member of the Latino Student Association at Wheaton while also earning Dean's List honors.

During her career, Davis has led the Lyons to an 81-8-6 mark and 67 shutouts, influencing a defensive unit that has yielded opponents just 50 goals in 8,717:22 for a 0.52 goals against average. She has started 90 of her 93 games. Against NEWMAC foes, Davis has helped the Lyons go 42-0-4 with 34 shutouts, allowing 16 goals in 4,228:34 for a 0.34 GAA.

The District I College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.

To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
