Lyons open NEWMAC slate with 3-0 victory, extend streak to 77 gamesSeptember 22, 2007 NORTHAMPTON, MA- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team extended its conference unbeaten streak to 77 games behind a 3-0 victory over Smith College in each team's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday. The teams played to an identical score and result in the 2006 NEWMAC Tournament title game. Wheaton, which is ranked 11th nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and is tied for first in the New England poll, improved to 8-0-1 overall by extending its regular season undefeated streak to 24 games. Smith fell to 1-4-1 on the season. Sophomore Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) put Wheaton up 13:20 into the contest, sending a free kick into the upper right hand corner of the net. Senior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) doubled the visitors' lead at 39:26, slipping a shot through junior keeper Marlowe Dieckmann's (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) hands. Junior Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) later buried a penalty kick at 47:39. Rabesa's marker was the 30th of her career, tying her for seventh in program history. Senior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross), who assisted Rabesa's tally, notched her 30th career helper to tie for sixth at Wheaton. Wheaton finished with advantages of 28-4 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks. Senior Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) made one first-half save in earning the win, while classmate Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) stopped one shot in relief. Dieckmann had seven saves. The Lyons face a tough regional opponent in Amherst College on Wednesday. Wheaton takes on the Lord Jeffs, who are ranked sixth in New England, on the road at 7:00 p.m. It will be a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament game, won by Amherst.
