Lyons win eighth successive NEWMAC regular season title with 5-1 triumph at WPI, Wheaton matches NCAA's second-longest streak

October 21, 2006

WORCESTER, MA- Saturday proved to be a record-filled day for the Wheaton College women's soccer team, which not only captured its eighth straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title following a 5-1 triumph at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) but also matched the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point for the NCAA's second-longest conference unbeaten streak at 72.

Individually, junior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) became Wheaton's sixth player to reach the 100-point milestone thanks to her goal in the 48th minute, putting her at exactly 100 points. The Lyons, ranked 10th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), won for the 14th straight time to move to 17-1 and 8-0. The Engineers are now 6-9-1 and 2-5-1.

Wheaton's balanced attack featured five different goal scorers and six different assist getters, with sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) and freshman Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) serving as the lone Lyons to figure in each category. Levy and Viscomi tallied the Blue and White's opening two scores through the first 20:20 of play, as juniors Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) and Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) were credited with the assists.

Freshmen Kathleen Carroll (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz Central) and Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) connected for Wheaton's third goal of the day at 31:27, as the Lyons carried a comfortable 3-0 advantage into the intermission. Junior goalkeeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) did her part by stopping three of WPI's four shots through the first 45 minutes, as Wheaton held a 15-4 edge in shots.

Konopka made it a 4-0 game with her milestone goal at 47:18, with Levy and Viscomi each picking up an assist on the play, and sophomore Bailey Edwards (Austin, TX/Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) extended the lead to five with her second goal of the fall at 66:10 on a helper from senior Bridget Furlong (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport). Six minutes later, WPI snapped Wheaton's shutout streak that spanned over 500 minutes with a goal from senior Ashley Maiorano (Southampton, MA/Hampshire Regional).

Wheaton junior goalie Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) finished with two saves in 39:30 of the second half. WPI junior Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) and freshman Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA/Bancroft) combined for eight saves. The Lyons held a 24-9 shot edge and 6-3 corner advantage.

Wheaton concludes its regular season Tuesday with a home game with Mount Holyoke College at 3:30 p.m.
