Lyons post sixth one-goal victory of fall following 1-0 road win at Babson

October 17, 2006

BABSON PARK, MA- Freshman Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) accounted for Tuesday afternoon's lone goal while junior goalies Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) and Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) combined for seven saves in the shutout, as Wheaton College posted its sixth one-goal victory of the fall thanks to a 1-0 road win at Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action.

Moving up a spot in the national poll to 10th while remaining second in the region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Lyons won for the 12th straight time to improve to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Wheaton also extended its NEWMAC unbeaten streak to 71 games, which is just one short of tying the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point for the second-longest conference unbeaten stretch in NCAA soccer history, regardless of division or gender. Babson fell to 8-4-3 and 3-2-2 with the loss.

The Beavers controlled the opening five minutes of play, putting two quick shots on Kronenberg, who started and played the first 45 minutes in net. Babson's best chance was its first, as first-year forward Kayla Pomponi (Belmont, MA/Belmont) slipped behind the Lyon defense and launched a shot toward the upper left corner less than a minute into the game. However, Kronenberg made an outstanding diving save to deflect the ball just beyond the left post and out of bounds. She then made a nice catch of senior Caitlin Cronin's (Hanover, MA/Hanover) shot a minute later.

The visitors picked up momentum around the eight-minute mark and eventually took the lead with 30:44 on the clock, as Levy took a through ball from junior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) on a play that developed on a cross from sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) and rifled a shot into the lower left corner of the net. Junior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) nearly gave the Lyons a one-goal edge earlier in the stanza, but Babson junior back Meg Lynch (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) came up with a big stop to keep Wheaton off the board.

Kronenberg, who earned her seventh win of the season following a three-save performance, gave way to Cockburn to begin the second half. Cockburn accounted for four stops in the final 45 minutes of play. Babson freshman keeper Sam Scarpato (Weston, MA/Noble & Greenough) recorded six stops in the loss. Wheaton held a narrow 18-16 advantage in shots, while the Beavers had seven corner kick chances to the Lyons' zero.

Today's shutout marked the 10th of the season for the Blue and White, while its 12th straight win stands sixth in Wheaton's annals, just two back of the fifth-place total. Konopka's point this afternoon puts her career total at 97, just three short of becoming Wheaton's sixth player to reach the 100-point plateau.

The Lyons step out of conference Thursday afternoon for a road game at Gordon College at 3:30 p.m.
