Four unanswered goals lifts Wheaton to NEWMAC win over Wellesley

NORTON, MA- Four unanswered goals for the nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team Saturday afternoon lifted the Lyons to a 4-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting Wellesley College in a battle of conference unbeatens at Mirrione Stadium.

The hosts extended their NEWMAC undefeated streak to 68 games since October 17, 2000, when Wheaton fell to Wellesley. Collecting their ninth straight series victory over Wellesley, the Lyons won their ninth consecutive game this season to improve to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the league. Wheaton came into today's game ranked 13th nationally and second regionally according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The visitors dropped to 7-3 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.

Wellesley opened today's scoring midway through the first half, as senior Alison Carney (Healdsburg, CA/Marin Academy) drove down the field and launched her shot into the upper corner of the net for a 1-0 edge. With four minutes to play in the stanza, Wheaton junior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) tied things up after tapping in an endline cross from classmate Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross). Despite a 1-1 score at the half, the Lyons held 12-5 and 5-0 advantages in shots and corner kicks, respectively.

Wheaton carried its first-half momentum into the second stanza, using three different goal scorers during a 20:50 span to put the game out of reach. Freshman Kathleen Carroll (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz Central) recorded the game-winner with 31:36 remaining, classmate Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) scored her second goal in as many games at 11:45, and Konopka, who also had two assists on the day, came out of a scramble and posted Wheaton's final goal of the contest with 10:46 on the clock.

In net for the Lyons, junior Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) was credited with three stops through the first 45 minutes, while classmate Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) registered one save en route to picking up the relief win with a scoreless second half. For Wellesley, freshman Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA/The Potomac School) finished with four saves. Wheaton ended up having a 25-9 edge in shots, while the corner kicks remained 5-0 in the Lyons' favor following zero chances in the second frame.

The Lyons hit the road Tuesday night for a conference contest against the United States Coast Guard Academy. Game time in New London, Connecticut, is set for 7:00 p.m.
