Wheaton women's soccer play to air on ESPN's SportsCenter

September 22, 2006

NORTON, MA- The September 9 Wheaton College women's soccer goal that set an NCAA record is scheduled to appear on national television tonight, as ESPN's SportsCenter will be airing the goal as part of its Top Plays segment. The play is slated to air on Saturday's 1:00 a.m. broadcast and might also run on tonight's 11:00 p.m. show.

The goal against Western Connecticut State University that Saturday went down as an NCAA all-divisions women's soccer record for fastest consecutive goals by opposing teams. Following a Western goal 2:44 into play, the Lyons took advantage of the ensuing kick from midfield to tie the game just three seconds later. Freshman Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) posted the memorable goal, while junior Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) was credited with the assist.

Wheaton's record surpassed the old Division III women's mark of 10 seconds set in 2004 by DeSales University and Lycoming College. The Division I standard from 2001 by the University of Connecticut and Yale University is six seconds, and the Division II record from 2003 involving California State University at Bakersfield and California State University at Los Angeles is 11 seconds.

In comparison to the men's record, the Lyon women matched the 1998 Division I mark set by the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of California at Los Angeles. Incidentally, the Division III record was set on two occasions by the Wheaton men, including the most recent 10-second mark against Rivier College in 2002. The first instance took place in 2000 versus Keene State College. In Division II, 14 seconds marked the fastest consecutive goals by California State University at San Bernardino and Grand Canyon University during the 2001 season.
