Rabesa's seventh career game-winner moves Wheaton past Worcester State, 1-0September 14, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer team completed its three-game homestand on a high note Thursday afternoon, with junior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) picking up her seventh career game-winning goal to lift the nationally-ranked Lyons to a 1-0 victory over non-conference foe Worcester State College at Mirrione Stadium. Ranked 23rd in the country and fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton finished a stretch of five straight games against 2005 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. The Lyons improved to 5-1 overall, while the Lancers suffered their first loss in five games and allowed their first goal of the season. Rabesa's first goal of the season came in the 48th minute, as she headed her shot into the back of the net following a flick from junior Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School). Freshman Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) got the play started by dumping the ball into the box from the left side of the field. Rabesa had a couple other scoring chances later in the second half, only to watch both shots sail over the crossbar. With 19:30 to play, Rabesa gave a short cross to a charging Sarah Krause (London, England/Hotchkiss School), whose shot nailed the crossbar to keep the game a one-goal margin. Sophomore Jamie Smith (Kensington, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) nearly put the game out of reach with just over three minutes remaining, but senior goalie Kim Massa (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) made a big save to keep the Lancers in striking distance. Massa also helped keep the game scoreless in the opening half, stopping a pair of Wheaton shots from McManus and first-year athlete Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) midway through the stanza. Massa finished the game with five saves on 24 Lyons shots, while Wheaton junior keeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) tied the school's all-time shutout record of 26 with three saves. The Blue and White held a 24-5 advantage in shots and 5-3 edge in corner kicks. The Wheaton women hit the road Saturday afternoon for a non-conference game against the University of Maine at Farmington at 1:00 p.m. SCORING: 1st 2nd Final 2nd Half: WC- Jenna Rabesa (Katelyn Brack) 47:45 Goalie Saves: WC- Stacey Kronenberg 3; WSC- Kim Massa 5 Shots: WC- 24; WSC- 5 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
