Powell represents Wheaton men at All New England Championship

May 12, 2007

HANOVER, NH- Sophomore Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) took part in three top-two finishes to lead the Wheaton College women's outdoor track and field team to a top-10 placement during this weekend's All New England Championship at Dartmouth College's Memorial Field. The Lyons earned 30.5 points and placed ninth among the 34 scoring teams, as Williams College was first with 108 points.

Freshman Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) was the lone representative on the men's side, leading Wheaton to a tie for 24th place in the 37-team field thanks to his finish in the 110-meter hurdles event. Recording an NCAA national meet provisional qualifying time of 14.65, Powell came in second with eight points. The University of Rhode Island was crowned champion with 155.5 points.

Ezeigwe turned in a personal-best time of 24.60 to win the 200-meter dash, as she fell 0.05 seconds shy of a national meet automatic qualifying standard. As it stands, her time ranks fourth on the Division III performance list entering the weekend. In addition to her provisional mark in the 200M, Ezeigwe helped the Lyons register a pair of provisional times in the 4x100M and 4x400M relay races.

Siding with senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater), sophomore Samira Sanders (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and freshman Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) in the 4x100M relay, Ezeigwe ran the second leg on a team that finished second in 48.46, just 0.07 ticks behind leader Southern Connecticut State University.

Ezeigwe anchored the runner-up 4x400M relay team, as she, Thompson and sophomores Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) came across the finish line in 3:52.32.

Harlow rounded out Wheaton's point scorers by tying for fourth in the high jump at 5' 3 3/4". She also just missed advancing to the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, taking 10th with an NCAA provisional time of 14.91. Sophomore Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) nearly scored in the heptathlon with a ninth-place result, as she was the lone Division III representative among 12 competitors.

The Lyons wrap up their regular seasons next Friday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Last Chance Qualifier.
