Peirce and Hafferkamp named to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference teamMay 3, 2007 NORTON, MA- Seven Wheaton College student-athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the spring of 2007. Student-athletes receiving the award must have maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2006 fall semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season. The men's and women's track and field teams each had a school-best two honorees. Senior Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and sophomore Scott Hafferkamp (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) represented the men's squad, while junior Abbe Bosk (Narberth, PA/Springside) and sophomore Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) earned honors from the women's team. This year marked the first that the men's track and field team had multiple academic all-conference honorees, and it was the second straight year Peirce qualified for the accolade. He also drew an academic award during the cross country season. Last weekend, Peirce scored in his final NEWMAC Championship event, the 10,000-meter run. Hafferkamp earned his first academic honor for track and field after drawing the award last fall during cross country. Bosk qualified for the accolade for the second straight spring, having twice been an academic all-conference cross country runner, while Jamiel drew the honor for the first time. Last weekend, Jamiel competed in three events as the Lyons finished second at the conference meet. Sophomore baseball player Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) earned academic all-conference honors, joining current assistant coach Zach Brown '00 in drawing the distinction during their respective careers. Foote leads the team in batting average (.401), slugging percentage (.533) and hits (55), and has driven home 27 runs while scoring 26 more and posting a .438 on-base percentage. As the Lyons' starting right fielder, Foote entered the week third in the NEWMAC in average, tied for fourth in RBI, tied for fifth in home runs, tied for seventh in triples and tied for eighth in runs. The Blue and White is currently 28-10, sitting seventh in the American Baseball Coaches Association's (ABCA) national poll and atop its New England rankings. Wheaton won its ninth straight regular season league title and eighth tournament crown and will participate in its seventh NCAA Tournament beginning on May 16 in Harwich. Women's lacrosse sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) qualified for her first academic all-conference accolade after corralling career highs in points (25) and goals (20). Grant finished second on the team in points and tied for second in goals and assists (5), as she appeared in 15 games and made 10 starts. The Lyons finished 4-12, including 3-3 in the league while drawing the NEWMAC Tournament's third seed. Senior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) of the men's tennis team qualified for the academic all-conference squad for the third straight season, becoming just the second player in program history to do so. A two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete, Stoddard also drew his first NEWMAC All-Conference honor since 2004 this spring by being half of a third doubles tandem that went 7-5. Stoddard added eight wins out of the fourth singles position. The Lyons finished 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the league, advancing to the NEWMAC Tournament final for the third straight year. The NEWMAC sponsors seven spring sports: baseball, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, softball, men's tennis, and men's and women's track and field. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
