Lyons compete at Delaware Invitational, women win team championship and men take fourthMay 7, 2005 NEWARK, DE- The Wheaton College women's outdoor track and field team followed last weekend's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship with yet another first-place performance Saturday at the Delaware Invitational, as the Lyons totaled 109 points to win the six-team field consisting of NCAA Division II and III institutions. The men placed fourth overall with 36 points. Senior captain Kirsten Larsen (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) led the women with a NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying standard in the javelin throw, while junior captain Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) paced the men in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Larsen reached a season-high distance of 132' 3" to run away with the javelin championship. Freshmen Cassandra Migani (Brooklyn, CT/Norwich Free Academy) and Christy Bell (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) rounded out the top three finishers in the event. Migani was also victorious in the discus throw. Sophomore Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) captured the high jump title, while senior captain Kathrine Wallace (Glenmoore, PA/The Hill School) took runner-up honors. On the track, senior Lindsay Whalen (Dedham, MA/Dedham) was Wheaton's lone double-winner with top times in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. The team's 4x100-meter relay team also posted the meet's top mark for the Lyons, as Harlow, senior captain Jessica Allegra (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) and first-year athletes Julie McLane (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) and Chelsea Nader (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) emerged victorious. McLane turned in a pair of solid all-around individual performances in the 100- and 400-meter hurdle events, just missing provisional qualifying marks in each. McLane finished second in the 400M event and third in the 100-meter hurdles. Nader took runner-up laurels in the 400-meter dash, while Allegra placed fourth overall. Sisodia placed fourth overall in both the 100- and 200-meter races to lead the men. Senior captain Patrick Freytag (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) placed third in the javelin throw and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles events, while senior captain Jamaal Rawls-Payton (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Matt Peirce (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) posted a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run and junior Ryan English (New Hartford, CT/Northwestern) captured a sixth-place mark in the 400-meter hurdles to round out Wheaton's top finishes. The Lyons continue their seasons next weekend at the All-New England Championships at the University of New Hampshire, as the Blue and White will begin the two-day meet on Friday, May 13.
