NEW YORK, NY- Former Wheaton College women's track & field national champion Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) captured the high jump title at last weekend's ninth annual USA Track & Field (USATF) National Club Championship at Icahn Stadium, as the 2007 graduate led her Greater Boston Track Club (GBTC) team to the crown.

Besting the 14-athlete field with a jump of 5′ 8 3/4″ and edging out a teammate by 1 3/4″, Harlow helped GBTC secure its third team title with 159 points. The meet came down to the final event, as defending champion Central Park Track Club (CPTC) totaled 154 points to finish second. More than 500 athletes representing 64 USATF clubs from 21 different states competed in the two-day meet.

A two-time indoor high jump national champion during her stellar four-year Wheaton career, Harlow twice tied for second at the NCAA outdoor meet. All told, she was a five-time NCAA All-America performer. Following graduation, Harlow returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach during the 2008 season, helping lead the Lyons to their ninth New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship.

Recent graduates Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls), Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) and Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) were among 274 women from Division III to land on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, while rising senior Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) was one of 186 men to draw an honor. To qualify, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 and met an NCAA Championship automatic or provisional qualifying standard during the indoor or outdoor season.

Jules capped her career with the award after reaching All-America status during the 4×400-meter relay at the outdoor NCAA Championship. Calderwood, who also earned a USTFCCCA All-Academic accolade following her junior year, joined Moreau and Reddy in reaching a qualifying time for the national meet in the distance medley relay during the indoor season. Moreau also ran for indoor and outdoor 4×400M relay quartets that met NCAA times. A second-time honoree, Ibric competed in both the 4×100M and 4×400M relays at the outdoor NCAA Championship.

With a 3.11 cumulative GPA, the Wheaton men's team was one of 51 Division III programs to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic status, while the women were among 100 squads honored thanks to their 3.11 GPA. To be nominated, a team must carry a minimum 3.10 GPA, with the top award going to the program that had the combination of best GPA and overall finish at the indoor or outdoor NCAA Championships.

Men's and Women's Track & Field Athletes Earn 10 All-America Accolades at NCAAs

The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track & field teams had 15 athletes compete at last week's three-day NCAA Championship, which came to an end on Saturday, as the programs sent their largest combined contingent since 2002 to the national meet. During the championship, which occurred at Marietta College in Ohio, eight women qualified for All-America status in a total of four events. The Lyon women placed 23rd among 79 scoring squads, earning their highest finish since 2004.

Wheaton's best showing came in the 4×400-meter relay, as the Blue and White took third. Seniors Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) and Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls), junior Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) and freshman Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, RI/La Salle Academy) ran legs, as the three upperclassmen each earned an All-America finish in the event for the third straight season. Between indoor and outdoor competition, Jules nabbed her fourth career All-America nod, while Cardarelli collected her first. The Lyons had another foursome attain All-America status, with the 4×100M relay quartet taking seventh. Ezeigwe and Thompson were joined by sophomore Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) and freshman Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical). Ezeigwe completed her career with nine All-America accolades, Thompson boosted her resume to include six, while Jusme and Smith each earned their first. At her first outdoor national championship, freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) took seventh during the triple jump, placing second among freshmen. She had also corralled All-America honors in the event at the NCAA's indoor meet. Sophomore Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) tied for seventh in the high jump, notching her third career All-America finish, and the first outdoors.

Wheaton sent men to the meet for the first time since 2007, as seven competed in a total of six events. Sophomore Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) fell 0.13 ticks short of the last qualifier for the 400-meter dash finals while competing in the trials, and senior Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) was within 0.10 seconds of the last finals qualifier in the 100M. In the preliminary round of the 4×400M relay, Williamson, juniors Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) and Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls), and freshman Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) clocked in at 3:15.69, falling 0.70 seconds shy of the last finals quartet.

Wheaton's largest outdoor track & field contingent in seven years will travel to Marietta College in Ohio later this week for the NCAA Division III Championship, as eight women and a program-high seven men made the final qualifying lists for the three-day meet beginning on Thursday at Drumm Stadium.

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College's largest outdoor track & field contingent in seven years will travel to Marietta College in Ohio later this week for the NCAA Division III Championship, as eight women and a program-high seven men made the final qualifying lists for the three-day meet beginning on Thursday at Drumm Stadium.

Wheaton's combined 15 athletes mark the highest number of national participants since the Lyons sent 17 in 2002, when the women captured their second straight outdoor title and sixth national championship overall. The women look to improve upon last year's finish of being tied for 38th, while the men return to the competition for the first time since 2007.

The men, who are primed to compete in six events, are making program history by not only sending the largest collection of athletes to a national championship but also having two relay teams at the meet for the initial time. Senior quad-captain Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) will also set a first by becoming the only male in school history to have competed in four events at the competition, as he is entered in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay events.

The school record holder in all four of those events, with each being broken this spring, Wright is seeking his first outdoor All-America accolade and second overall. Junior quad-captain Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) joins Wright in both relay races, as Ibric is also after his initial outdoor All-America honor and second overall, while junior Mark Cimino (Danbury, CT/Danbury) and freshman Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) round out the 4×100M relay quartet, which automatically qualified for NCAAs with the nation's third-fastest time of 40.95.

Robinson joins Wright in the 100M dash competition, while Wheaton's 4×400M relay foursome consists of Ibric, Wright, sophomore Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) and freshman Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken). Williamson will also run in the 400M, while junior quad-captain Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) rounds out the men's participants, as he ranks 10th in the country in the 110M hurdles in 14.56, which is the program standard. Powell earned All-America status during the indoor 55M hurdles as a sophomore. The aforementioned seven athletes are all vying for their initial outdoor All-America awards.

For the women, senior quad-captain Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) and junior Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver) make up two legs of each the 4×100M and 4×400M relay teams. Both athletes are looking for their third straight All-America finish in the 4×400M relay. Ezeigwe boasts a combined seven indoor and outdoor All-America honors to date, while Thompson has four.

Ezeigwe and Thompson will side with sophomore Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) and freshman Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) in the 4×100M race, an event which the Lyons enter ranked sixth in the country at 47.61. Jusme and Smith look to garner All-America laurels for the first time. Wheaton's 4×400M relay quartet is comprised of Ezeigwe, Thompson, senior quad-captain Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and freshman Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, RI/La Salle Academy). A three-time All-American, Jules joined Ezeigwe and Thompson on the last two outdoor 4×400M All-America squads.

Sophomore Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) seeks her initial outdoor All-America accolade in the high jump, as her height of 5′ 5 3/4″ ties for seventh best among competitors. She has already claimed two All-America awards during the high jump competition at indoor nationals. Fresh off an indoor All-America finish in the triple jump, freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) is among the field of outdoor competitors, as her leap of 39′ 4″ is fourth best.

Most of Wheaton's athletes will see action on Thursday, as all four relay teams are slated to compete in the trials of their events. Wright will also take part in the preliminaries of the 200M dash at 6:00 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, MA- During their final chance to qualify for next week's NCAA Championship, Wheaton College track & field athletes combined to reach six provisional standards while breaking two school records at the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship, which came to an end on Friday at Springfield College's Blake Track.

Wheaton joined Moravian College as the lone school to place each of its squads among the top seven, as the Lyon women took fifth out of 56 scoring teams with 44 points. They came within two points of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Springfield. The men were seventh among 56 with 31 points, placing two points ahead of the Pride while falling 1.5 points short of Buffalo State College and the State University of New York at Cortland, which tied for fifth. Moravian won both the men's and women's competitions.

In the 4×400-meter relay competition, senior Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale), junior Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy), sophomore Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) and freshman Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) topped a field of 31 foursomes in an NCAA provisional time of 3:15.22, bettering the school record set on Saturday by 0.70 seconds. Wheaton's quartet won by 2.62 seconds, nearly matching the 2.80 ticks that separated the second- through 11th-place squads.

Junior Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) was the runner up in the 110M hurdles at 14.63, provisionally qualifying for NCAAs. Freshman Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) was second in the 200M at 21.71, an NCAA time that left him just 0.08 seconds short of matching the school record. During the 100M, Robinson was fourth at 11.00.

Lyons scored points in seven women's events, including when the 4×100M relay squad won in 47.61 to reach an NCAA provisional standard. Senior Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy), junior Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver), sophomore Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) and freshman Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) bested a 23-team field, coming within 0.31 seconds of an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championship.

Sophomore Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) met an NCAA standard in the high jump at 5′ 5 3/4″, tying for second. During the 4×400M relay, Ezeigwe, Thompson, senior Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and freshman Lauren Cardarelli (Cranston, RI/La Salle Academy) took third in 3:53.10, provisionally qualifying them for the national meet.

Senior Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) eclipsed a 10-year-old program record in the heptathlon, tallying 4,056 points to edge out Kerry Teamey's '03 former mark of 4,011. Jamiel took second in the event and fell just 44 points shy of an NCAA standard.

During the long jump, freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) placed fourth at 17′ 10 1/4″, falling just 1 1/4″ short of a provisional distance. Smith was fourth in the 200M at 25.68, and Jules finished sixth in the 400M with a time of 58.23.

Qualifying athletes will compete at the three-day NCAA Championship at Marietta College in Ohio beginning next Thursday. The national meet field will be announced on Monday.
