Wheaton men's soccer junior Yuri Moreira was named NEWMAC Player of the Year and was among five all-conference selections on Tuesday at the postseason meeting at Clark.

WORCESTER, MA- Wheaton College men's soccer junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year and was among five all-conference selections on Tuesday at the postseason meeting at Clark University.

Moreira became the sixth Wheaton player to earn the league's top individual honor, including the first since 2005, and the forward was the first Lyon striker to be selected since 1999. Joining him on the first team were juniors David Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway) and Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional), who each landed on the first team last fall. Classmate Kyle Sye (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) became the fifth player in program history to draw three all-conference honors, as he and freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) earned second-team selections.

Yuri Moreira

Moreira, who was named to the second squad as a sophomore, leads the NEWMAC in points (34), goals (16) and game-winning markers (7), tying for third in school annals in single-season goals, placing seventh in points and coming within one of the eight-year-old mark for game-winners. Moreira recorded at least one marker in 11 contests, turning in all of Wheaton's goals during four victories, including in a 2-1 win at then-nationally-ranked Western New England College. Moreira scored the team's first goal nine times, including tallying in a 1-0 win over Springfield College during the regular season before netting the overtime winner against the United States Coast Guard Academy and both markers in a 2-0 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He enters his senior year tied for second at Wheaton in career goals (35) and seventh in points (76).

David Ferriero

Ferriero started 20 games in the backfield, anchoring a defense that is first in the NEWMAC in fewest goals allowed, most shutouts and lowest goals against average. During league play, the Lyons yielded just three markers in six games, including one on a penalty kick. Ferriero's goal this season staked Wheaton to a lead against nationally-ranked Williams College, which qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Blue and White allowed one goal or fewer 18 times, posting 10 shutouts while yielding no more than two goals in any contest, turning the feat for the first time since the 2001 campaign. The Lyons' 0.76 GAA was fourth best in school history.

Josh Solomon

A forward, Solomon provided a scoring punch for the top offensive team in the conference, tying for eighth in the NEWMAC in each points (19) and goals (7) while tying for ninth in assists (5). In addition to scoring two game-winning goals, he assisted two more. Against Coast Guard, Solomon netted the tying marker in an eventual overtime win before assisting the go-ahead goal during a 2-1 victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He recorded a hat trick once while picking up two assists twice.

Kyle Sye

As one of three players to start all 23 games, Sye was an instrumental midfield contributor on both offense and defense. He provided the game-winning goal against NCAA Tournament qualifier Saint Joseph's College of Maine and assisted the Lyons' first marker against the University of Southern Maine.

Cecil Jeffrey

In his first fall of college soccer, Jeffrey, a midfielder, tied for the league lead in assists (4) during conference play while tying for ninth overall in helpers (5). Three of Jeffrey's assists came on game-winning goals, including two in NEWMAC play, while he lent a hand in the game-tying marker during an eventual overtime win against Coast Guard. In the league tournament, Jeffrey netted the 75th-minute winner versus Springfield in the first round before giving the Lyons an 81st-minute advantage in an eventual 3-2 victory over Clark in the semifinals.

Wheaton finished the fall at 18-4-1 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC, suffering its four losses to a trio of teams that made the NCAA Tournament field. The Lyons are ranked seventh in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll.

Men's Soccer (18-4-1, 5-1) Advances to Eighth NEWMAC Title Game, Drops 2-1 Decision

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is tied for 18th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and sits third in the New England rankings, saw its season come to an end on Sunday, as the second-seeded Lyons finished with a 2-1 mark during the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament after falling in the championship game at number-one Babson College, 2-1. Wheaton had downed seventh-seeded Springfield College, 2-1 in the first round on Wednesday before notching a 3-2 victory in double overtime against number-six Clark University during a Saturday semifinal at Babson. The Lyons advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals for the 10th straight season and to their eighth title game.

The Blue and White posted 10 shutouts, its most since 2005, and yielded no more than two goals in any contest all fall, its first time turning that feat since 2001. The Lyons' 18 wins were their most since 2003 and tied for the third-highest total in program history, while their 0.76 goals against average was the fourth best. Wheaton's seven-game winning streak prior to the title game was its longest since 2004.

Freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) scored with 15:16 remaining against visiting Springfield, snapping a tie and sending Wheaton into the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals. The Lyons took their first lead in the 18th minute, as junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored off a long breakout pass from classmate and keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School). Davidson made two saves in net.

Freshman Max Swanson (Lexington, MA/Lexington) scored with eight seconds left in the second sudden-death overtime period against Clark, just before the teams would have gone to a penalty-kick shootout. Junior defender David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) scored his first goal since September 2007 during the 57th minute before the Cougars knotted the contest, but Jeffrey provided another late marker in the 81st minute to put Wheaton on top. However, Clark again countered, this time less than a minute later, sending the teams to overtime and setting up Swanson's heroics. Davidson made one save, as the Lyons held advantages of 33-10 in shots and 9-2 in corner kicks.

Freshman back Howard Manly (Ayer, MA/Lawrence Academy) tallied his first collegiate goal to put Wheaton on top in the 53rd minute of the NEWMAC Tournament championship game at Babson, but the hosts, ranked seventh in the region, scored twice 10 minutes apart to go ahead. Davidson made four saves, while Manly provided a goal-line stop in the first half to deny the Beavers the lead. Wheaton and Babson have combined to win 11 of the 12 NEWMAC Tournament titles.

Moreira is tied for second in program history in career goals (35) and stands seventh in points (76), while junior Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) is tied for sixth in assists (22). Davidson is fourth in wins (28), tied for fourth in shutouts (15), fifth in minutes (4,322:45) and sixth in saves (163). Junior Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) is seventh in victories (13), and senior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) tied for sixth in games played (82). Moreira tied for third in single-season goals (16), two off the school mark, and notched the seventh-most points (34). Davidson tied for third in shutouts (8) and tied for fifth in wins (14) while posting the fifth-best GAA (0.78) and playing the seventh-most minutes (1,736:22).

The second-seeded Wheaton men's soccer team narrowly fell to number-one Babson, 2-1 on Sunday in the NEWMAC Tournament title game on Hartwell-Rogers Field.

BABSON PARK, MA- The second-seeded Wheaton College men's soccer team narrowly fell to number-one Babson College, 2-1 on Sunday in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title game on Hartwell-Rogers Field. It marked the third time in the last four years the teams met for the championship.

The Lyons, who are tied for 18th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) national poll and sit third in the New England rankings, slipped to 18-4-1, as each of their losses has been by a single goal. Wheaton will now await its postseason fate and find out on Monday whether it earns an at-large berth into its eighth NCAA Tournament in 10 years. The Beavers, who are seventh in the region, improved to 15-5-1 in defending their league tournament crown and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Wheaton and Babson have now combined to win 11 of the 12 titles in NEWMAC Tournament history.

After making a team save during the first half, freshman back Howard Manly (Ayer, MA/Lawrence Academy) tallied his first career goal in the second stanza, putting the visitors on top in the 53rd minute. Junior keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made four saves, as Wheaton held advantages of 24-12 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks.

Senior Dan Fogarty (Brookline, NH/Hollis Brookline) assisted both of Babson's tallies, as junior Dan Hixon (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and sophomore Jimmy Stento (Needham, MA/Needham) scored in the 67th and 77th minutes, respectively. Sophomore keeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, MA/Brooks School) made five stops between the Beaver pipes.

Wheaton took the second-half lead following a corner kick, as Manly rushed on to a loose ball in the box and put the Lyons on top at 52:14. Davidson came up big a couple minutes later, knocking down a Fogarty cross and covering a rolling ball. In the 66th minute, Davidson dove toward the upper left-hand corner to deny sophomore Billy Nickerson (Middleton, MA/Pingree School), but Hixon headed home Fogarty's ensuing corner kick at 66:04. Just 10:04 later, Stento slid to knock in Fogarty's cross from the left side.

The Lyons had a pair of chances late, with the best one coming off the head of junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) with nine minutes to go, but his redirection of a long free kick barely missed the right post. A final entry pass with 30 seconds left landed in the hands of Crowley.

Babson had a pair of opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, as Nickerson's initial eighth-minute shot was blocked before his second try was denied point-blank by Davidson. A dangerous Beaver cross through the goal mouth in the 19th minute went untouched, leading to a Lyon breakout. However, Moreira's shot after rushing down field was blocked, and classmate Josh Solomon's (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) follow-up attempt drifted high.

After yielding three of the first five shots, Wheaton took eight of the next nine, but Babson freshman Ayo Iwuagwu (Lagos, Nigeria/Brooks School) had a golden chance late in the first period. His shot with 1:04 left was on an open net, but Manly cleared the ball out near the right post. The Beavers collected the rebound but had their second try blocked. Wheaton held a 10-6 advantage in shots at the break.

Babson's last loss to a NEWMAC team was in the 2007 title game against Wheaton, as the Lyons are 4-2 all time against the Beavers in the league tournament, including 3-0 in championship contests. Clark slipped to 9-7-2, as each of its losses has been by one goal. The Lyons eliminated the Cougars for the third straight season.

Swanson's winner was his second in four games, as he and freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) each finished with a goal and an assist. Wheaton took 27 of the last 30 shots, finishing with advantages of 33-10 in shots and 9-2 in corner kicks. Junior back David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) also scored, while junior keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made one save. Seven of Wheaton's eight games with NEWMAC foes have been decided by one goal.

Senior Preben Gietz (Waterloo, Belgium/Saint John's International School) and junior Tim Doenmez (Dublin, NH/Dublin School) scored for Clark, while freshman Ryan King (Brimfield, MA/Tantasqua Regional) made 10 saves.

The Lyons took all seven shots in the overtime periods, including Swanson being stopped by King with 25 seconds to go in the first session. King made another save with 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime stanza, but Swanson struck just 28 ticks later. Jeffrey sent a ball to the back post, where sophomore Chris Thomas (Cumberland, ME/Phillips Academy) one-timed a cross over the head of King, and Swanson headed home the game-winner from the right side into the far left corner.

Wheaton took advantage of a Clark red card in the 50th minute by netting the go-ahead marker at 56:54, as freshman back David Turina's (North Yarmouth, ME/Northfield Mount Hermon School) corner-kick pass set up Winrow's shot from 25 yards away. The Lyons took 14 straight shots at one point, but the next Cougar attempt was by Doenmez, who knotted the score at 63:44. Jeffrey's second late go-ahead goal in as many postseason contests this fall put the Lyons up at 80:26, with Swanson assisting, but Gietz's header from the top of the box off a teammate's serve from midfield tied the game 42 seconds later.

The Blue and White nearly broke on the board early in the contest but was denied by a Clark defensive stand. Off a corner kick, Swanson headed a shot toward goal in the seventh minute, but a Cougar field player recorded a team save, and Thomas' attempt shortly thereafter was denied by King. Clark later narrowly missed taking a first-half lead, as freshman Gianluca Ranallo (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) hit the post in the 24th minute before a teammate's follow-up try went wide. Wheaton held slim edges of 9-7 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks during the opening stanza.

NORTON, MA- The second-seeded Wheaton College men's soccer team heads into the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinals for the 10th straight season this weekend, as the Lyons chase their eighth league tournament crown and ninth NCAA Tournament berth. Babson College will be the site of Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's final, with Wheaton squaring off against sixth-seeded Clark University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Lyons, who eliminated the Cougars during the first round of the 2008 NEWMAC Tournament, enter the weekend 17-3-1 overall and tied for 18th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) national poll, as well as third in the New England rankings. Top-seeded Babson and number-four Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) play in Saturday's 10:30 a.m. semifinal, with the championship game taking place on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Wheaton posted a 5-1 mark during NEWMAC action, falling by a 1-0 count to Babson for its only loss and downing Clark by the same score, before knocking off number-seven Springfield College, 2-1 during the first round of the league tournament on Wednesday. Six of the seven contests the Blue and White has played against conference teams this season have been decided by one goal.

In qualifying for their 11th semifinal round in the NEWMAC's 12-year history, the Lyons reached the 10-win plateau for the 18th straight season and are tied for fourth in program history in wins. With its victory over Springfield, Wheaton has yielded just five goals in the past 11 games and is 7-1-1 in its past nine league postseason contests. While recording an 18-4-1 all-time mark during conference tournament action, the Lyons have defeated Clark all three times they have met in the postseason.

Anchoring the fifth-best defense in New England has been junior keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School), a tri-captain who is tied for third in program history with eight shutouts this year and is tied for sixth in wins, having gone 13-3-1 with a 0.64 goals against average and an .825 save percentage. Wheaton has yielded one goal or fewer in 15 of Davidson's 17 appearances.

Five defenders have seen ample playing time in the backfield, as junior David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and freshman David Turina (North Yarmouth, ME/Northfield Mount Hermon School) are two of only three Lyons who have started all 21 games. Each of junior tri-captain David Ferriero's (Medway, MA/Medway) 18 appearances has been a start, freshman Howard Manly (Ayer, MA/Lawrence Academy) has started 16 of his 19 games, and sophomore Matt Flaherty (Westlake Village, CA/Worcester Academy) has appeared 17 times, drawing eight starts.

Junior tri-captain Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) leads the NEWMAC in scoring, having netted 16 goals, among them seven winners. Classmate Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) provides Wheaton with another dangerous striker, having recorded seven goals and five assists, and freshman Max Swanson (Lexington, MA/Lexington) is third on the squad with four goals. Twenty two of the 28 players who have appeared have at least one point.

Junior Kyle Sye (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) and sophomore Chris Thomas (Cumberland, ME/Phillips Academy) have started 21 and 20 games, respectively, in the midfield for a team that boast the NEWMAC's top offensive and defensive numbers, while freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) has made an immediate impact with a team-high-tying five assists and a pair of goals, including the winner against Springfield.

NORTON, MA- The second-seeded Wheaton College men's soccer team notched a 2-1 victory over seventh seed Springfield College during Wednesday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament quarterfinal game at Keefe Field. Upping their record to 17-3-1, the Lyons advance to their 10th straight semifinal round.

Moving on to Saturday's semifinal round at Babson College, where it will face the winner of tonight's game between number-three United States Coast Guard Academy and sixth seed Clark University, Wheaton, which extended its winning streak to a season-best six games, is tied for 18th in the country and ranked third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Springfield ended its season at 5-13-1.

Freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) turned in his first career game-winner, coming in the 75th minute, while junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) posted his conference-best 16th goal in the opening half on a long assist from junior keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School), who also finished with two stops. Wheaton held edges of 11-7 in shots and 7-5 in corner kicks.

Springfield freshman Alex Reilly (Ledyard, CT/Ledyard) provided the tying marker in the 58th minute, while classmate Chris Walton (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) had three saves.

Davidson earned the assist after booting the ball three quarters of the field to a streaking Moreira, who carried the ball down the right side before blasting his shot from inside the box into the upper left netting at 17:27. The Lyons took six of the first-half's seven shots, with the Pride's lone attempt coming off a free kick.

After an apparent Wheaton goal was negated due to an offsides call early in the second frame, Springfield knotted the contest shortly thereafter. Reilly collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and outside the box before drilling his shot to the right side of the target and beyond the reach of a diving Davidson at 57:39.

With each team playing a man short for the final 31:39 of the second half, the hosts took the lead for good with 15:16 to go. From the right end line, freshman Max Swanson (Lexington, MA/Lexington) broke down a couple of Springfield defenders before freeing himself for a quick cross to an oncoming Jeffrey, who tucked away his shot into the lower right corner of the net at 74:44.

Junior Yuri Moreira scored two second-half goals during a 7:48 span, pushing regionally-ranked Wheaton to a 2-0 win on Saturday over WPI during NEWMAC men's soccer action on Senior Day at Keefe Field.

NORTON, MA- Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored two second-half goals during a 7:48 span, pushing regionally-ranked Wheaton College to a 2-0 win on Saturday over Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Senior Day at Keefe Field. This afternoon also marked the regular season finale for both teams.

Ranked fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton begins next week's NEWMAC Tournament as the second seed, as the Lyons will host either Clark University or Springfield College in a first-round game on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Winners of five straight games, Wheaton is 16-3-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. WPI, which slipped to 9-6-1 and 2-3-1, awaits its postseason fate.

Moreira tallied his 14th and 15th goals of the season in the 69th and 76th minutes, respectively, as Wheaton controlled play throughout with advantages of 17-2 in shots and 9-2 in corner kicks. Moreira's 15 goals are tied for fourth in program annals, as sophomore Pablo Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School of El Salvador) and freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) were credited with the assists.

Wheaton's defense, spearheaded by junior goalie Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School), kept the WPI offense at bay, limiting the Engineers to one shot during the flow of play, as the other WPI attempt came off a first-half penalty kick. The Lyons posted their 10th shutout, as Davidson collected his eighth after making a huge stop in the second half. Davidson's eight clean sheets are tied for third best in a single season at Wheaton. Junior Paul Moan (Watertown, MA/Watertown) turned aside four shots for the Engineers.

After the hosts took the game's first eight shots by the 40th minute, the Engineers were awarded a penalty kick with 4:02 to go in the opening half. However, the attempt sailed over the crossbar, and the teams entered the intermission scoreless. Early in the second half, WPI senior Dominic DeChiara (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake Regional) ripped a 30-yard shot toward the upper middle netting, but Davidson punched the ball over the target to preserve the deadlock.

With just over 30 minutes to go, Lyon freshman Max Swanson's (Lexington, MA/Lexington) header was cleared off the line by a WPI defender, but Moreira broke the stalemate at 68:06, as his left-footed strike carried over the outstretched reach of Moan. Mena fed Moreira with a touch after taking a few dribbles from the left flank. Not even eight minutes later, Moreira caught up to a Jeffrey pass that went past the Engineer defense, leaving a breakaway for Moreira, who took advantage by pushing his shot underneath a sliding Moan.
