Women's Soccer (18-4-2, 6-1-2) Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is ranked fifth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), went 1-1 over the weekend at Middlebury College, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling. The Lyons knocked off Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 2-0 in Saturday's first round before dropping a 2-1 decision to the host Panthers on Sunday. It marked the 10th straight season Wheaton qualified for the NCAA Tournament, as Middlebury was also the site of its first NCAA road trip during the 2000 season.

With 16 shutouts, the Lyons tied the fifth-highest total in program history as well as placing sixth in goals against average (0.45) and tying for ninth in wins (18). Wheaton blanked 12 of its last 16 opponents while allowing six goals in the last 1,506:53 over 17 contests since September 23.

In her first collegiate contest in her home state, junior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) delivered both of Wheaton's goals against Richard Stockton in the teams' first meeting. Her first marker came in the sixth minute, snapping the Ospreys' shutout streak at 325:17. During the 49th minute, senior Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) sent a corner kick that the Richard Stockton keeper came out to secure but dropped while falling in the rainy conditions, and Hough pounced on the loose ball for her second goal. Sophomore Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) made three saves against the Ospreys, who were ranked sixth in the NSCAA South Atlantic regional poll.

Against Middlebury, which is ranked 12th nationally and second in New England by the NSCAA, senior Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) knotted the contest before the hosts tallied the winner early in the second half. After the Panthers scored in the 16th minute, Wheaton countered in the 32nd. Sophomore Emily Vincunas (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) worked to keep the ball in on the sideline and carried up the left side of the field, sending a centering cross to freshman Cassey Muse (Candia, NH/Central), who touched the ball off to a rushing Levy, and the midfielder tallied at 31:23. However, Middlebury took its only two shots of the second half in the 50th minute, with Leddy going high to deny a chance but the rebound finding another Panther, who netted the winner. Leddy finished with two saves, as the Lyons held slim edges of 8-6 in shots and 3-1 in corners.

Hough is seventh in program history in career assists (33), eighth in points (97) and ninth in goals (32), while Leddy is third in shutouts (18), fourth in wins (29) and sixth in minutes (3,806:05). McManus completed her four years tied for ninth in games played (92). With her numbers this fall, Leddy was third in season minutes by a keeper (1,992:12), sixth in wins (16), tied for sixth in shutouts (8) and eighth in goals against average (0.50). Muse finished with 15 goals this fall, the third-highest freshman total in program history, and had eight winners. With 10 assists, Hough became the fifth Wheaton player with three double-digit assist seasons.

The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming & diving teams had the rare single-gender dual meets last week, as the women picked up a 160-140 victory against the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy on Friday before the men dropped a pair of decisions to Coast Guard, 196-77 and New York University, 207-95 in a double-dual meet hosted by Coast Guard on Saturday.

Wheaton's women won eight events against the Bears, with juniors Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and sophomore Julia Wright (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon School) combining to account for all of the victories. Piscetta played a role in four wins, capturing the 100-yard butterfly and 100- and 200-yard freestyle races while anchoring the victorious 400-yard medley relay team, joining Zais, senior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and sophomore Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame). Zais captured both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, while Wright secured the top scores in the one- and three-meter dives for the third time in as many meets this season.

The Lyon men went up against an NYU team that was 24th at least year's NCAA Championship and a Bear squad that took second at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) meet. Junior Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) earned third-place finishes in the one- and three-meter diving events, falling just 0.40 points shy of second place during the one-meter dive. Sophomore Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) turned in the Lyons' other third-place mark during the 100-yard backstroke.

Men's Soccer (18-4-1, 5-1) Advances to Eighth NEWMAC Title Game, Drops 2-1 Decision

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is tied for 18th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and sits third in the New England rankings, saw its season come to an end on Sunday, as the second-seeded Lyons finished with a 2-1 mark during the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament after falling in the championship game at number-one Babson College, 2-1. Wheaton had downed seventh-seeded Springfield College, 2-1 in the first round on Wednesday before notching a 3-2 victory in double overtime against number-six Clark University during a Saturday semifinal at Babson. The Lyons advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals for the 10th straight season and to their eighth title game.

The Blue and White posted 10 shutouts, its most since 2005, and yielded no more than two goals in any contest all fall, its first time turning that feat since 2001. The Lyons' 18 wins were their most since 2003 and tied for the third-highest total in program history, while their 0.76 goals against average was the fourth best. Wheaton's seven-game winning streak prior to the title game was its longest since 2004.

Freshman Cecil Jeffrey (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) scored with 15:16 remaining against visiting Springfield, snapping a tie and sending Wheaton into the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals. The Lyons took their first lead in the 18th minute, as junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored off a long breakout pass from classmate and keeper Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School). Davidson made two saves in net.

Freshman Max Swanson (Lexington, MA/Lexington) scored with eight seconds left in the second sudden-death overtime period against Clark, just before the teams would have gone to a penalty-kick shootout. Junior defender David Winrow (South Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) scored his first goal since September 2007 during the 57th minute before the Cougars knotted the contest, but Jeffrey provided another late marker in the 81st minute to put Wheaton on top. However, Clark again countered, this time less than a minute later, sending the teams to overtime and setting up Swanson's heroics. Davidson made one save, as the Lyons held advantages of 33-10 in shots and 9-2 in corner kicks.

Freshman back Howard Manly (Ayer, MA/Lawrence Academy) tallied his first collegiate goal to put Wheaton on top in the 53rd minute of the NEWMAC Tournament championship game at Babson, but the hosts, ranked seventh in the region, scored twice 10 minutes apart to go ahead. Davidson made four saves, while Manly provided a goal-line stop in the first half to deny the Beavers the lead. Wheaton and Babson have combined to win 11 of the 12 NEWMAC Tournament titles.

Moreira is tied for second in program history in career goals (35) and stands seventh in points (76), while junior Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) is tied for sixth in assists (22). Davidson is fourth in wins (28), tied for fourth in shutouts (15), fifth in minutes (4,322:45) and sixth in saves (163). Junior Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) is seventh in victories (13), and senior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) tied for sixth in games played (82). Moreira tied for third in single-season goals (16), two off the school mark, and notched the seventh-most points (34). Davidson tied for third in shutouts (8) and tied for fifth in wins (14) while posting the fifth-best GAA (0.78) and playing the seventh-most minutes (1,736:22).

The Wheaton College field hockey team lost twice last week at Wellesley College, getting bounced from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the third straight year by the Blue and for the fifth time in six seasons.
Sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) scored in the 67th minute on Tuesday to cut the Wellesley lead to 2-1 before the hosts tallied once more. Senior keeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made 13 saves, while sophomore back Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug Valley) turned in a defensive save early in the second half with her team down just 1-0.

Junior Margaux Bolte (Belmont, MA/Belmont) staked the underdog Lyons to a 1-0 halftime advantage during the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament after scoring in the 33rd minute, but Wellesley responded with a big second half. Bagley made 12 stops for Wheaton in her final contest.
