Men's Lacrosse (8-8, 6-1) Advances to ECAC Tournament Semifinals Before Falling

The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team split a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament games for the fourth time in as many trips to the tournament, advancing to the semifinals before seeing its season come to an end. The second-seeded Lyons ran away from number-seven Becker College, 24-4 on Wednesday during the first round in Norton before dropping a 10-7 decision to third-seeded New England College on Saturday during a semifinal contest at Endicott College.

Against Becker, the Lyons overcame an early deficit with 19 straight goals. Freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) tallied six goals and three assists while setting a program record for freshmen with nine points, sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) added four markers and three helpers, and classmate Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) turned in a hat trick, as the trio saw action in the first half before appearing only on man-up opportunities during the second half. Freshman Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, MA/Bancroft School) totaled three goals and two assists, while sophomore Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) had a pair of markers and one assist. Junior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) collected two helpers, and classmate Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made two saves. Junior Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School), sophomore Peter Buongiorno (Pittsburgh, PA/Winchester Thurston School) and freshman David Schroeder (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) had a goal and an assist apiece, with Buongiorno netting his first collegiate tally. Senior Chris Gogan-Tilstone (Amherst, NH/Souhegan), junior Andrew Brunhofer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and freshman Conor Finn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) each scored once.

Wheaton fell shy of its first ECAC Tournament crown, as the Lyons stood tied with New England College, 4-4 at halftime before a 4-0 run put the Pilgrims up for good. Junior Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) tallied a pair of markers, while senior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) had a goal, two assists and a 7-for-11 showing on face-offs during his final collegiate game. Cederberg and freshman Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, MA/Proctor Academy) totaled one goal and one assist apiece, with Willauer recording his first points as a collegian. Horn made six saves.

Horn tied for fourth in program history in single-season wins (8) and was fifth in minutes (810) and seventh in goals against average (9.41). Gomer was third in ground balls (85) and fifth in face-off victories (103), winning 100 draws for the third time. Garceau was 10th in face-offs (84). Cederberg tied for sixth in assists (26) with the most by a Lyon in seven years and tied for 10th in points (54), recording the highest total by a Wheaton underclassman since 1997. With 31 goals, McNamara posted the most by a Lyon freshman since 1994 while becoming just the third freshman in program history to reach 30 goals.

Gomer finished first in school annals in career ground balls (289), second in face-off wins (415) and tied for second in games (61). Senior Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) ended up first in games (64) and sixth in ground balls (131).
The Wheaton men's lacrosse team's quest for the program's first ECAC Tournament championship came to an end Saturday night, as the second-seeded Lyons fell to number-three New England College, 10-7 in the semifinal round at Endicott's Endicott Stadium.

BEVERLY, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team's quest for the program's first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament championship came to an end Saturday night, as the second-seeded Lyons fell to number-three New England College, 10-7 in the semifinal round at Endicott College's Endicott Stadium.

Winners in eight of its past nine games entering today's contest, Wheaton finished its first season under head coach Brian Endicott with an 8-8 record. The Pilgrims, now 10-7, move on to face host Endicott in tomorrow's title game.

Despite holding decisive first-half advantages in multiple categories, including 24-11 in shots, 21-7 in ground balls and 7-2 in face-offs, the Lyons needed a late tally in the second period to knot the score at four heading into the intermission. Senior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), who went 7-for-11 on face-offs during the game while scooping up eight ground balls and tacking on three points, opened the game's scoring with an unassisted tally 2:42 into the first.

After New England College scored with 9:26 to play in the opening quarter, Wheaton freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) answered just 1:06 after that, connecting on a feed from sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) during a man-up opportunity for what proved to be the last goal of the frame.

The back-and-forth affair continued into the second quarter, as three ties took place, with the Pilgrims knotting the game at two 2:01 into play. Junior Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) pushed the Lyons back in front at the 8:10 mark before New England College scored twice during an 11-second span for a 4-3 edge with more than five minutes remaining before the half. At 1:45, Gomer found sophomore Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) for the equalizer.

The second half belonged to the Pilgrims, who went on a 4-0 run to open the third and held a comfortable 8-4 advantage by 4:59. Cederberg pulled Wheaton to within 8-5 with 2:43 to play in the third, but New England College rattled off two goals to begin the fourth and lead 10-5 at 7:26. Horan and freshman Charlie Willauer (Duxbury, MA/Proctor Academy) netted back-to-back goals, making the score 10-7 with 2:17 to go. After the Lyons won the ensuing face, they had their final two shots go for naught, as the Pilgrims held possession for most of the final two minutes to ice the win.

Wheaton, which entered the week with the nation's seventh-best man-up offense, was 1-for-4 against New England College, which converted two of its four chances. Horan finished with two goals for the Lyons, Gomer had one tally and two assists, while Cederberg and Willauer each added one goal and one helper. Junior goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) turned aside six shots.

Pilgrim junior Matt Vozzolo (Somers, CT/Somers) led all scorers with four goals and one assist, while sophomore Nick Acquaviva (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had 12 saves in the cage.

NORTON, MA- Eleven different players scored for the second-seeded Wheaton College men's lacrosse team on Wednesday, as the Lyons overcame an early deficit with 19 straight goals during a 24-4 victory over number-seven Becker College in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament in Mirrione Stadium. Now 8-7, Wheaton will take on third-seeded New England College in the semifinals at Endicott College on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The Hawks ended the year at 9-4.

Freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) put the Lyons on the board after 1:51 in the opening quarter, but the Hawks responded by taking a 2-1 edge at the 8:50 mark. Three more Wheaton goals later went on the board during a 48-second span, with McNamara tallying the final two in 25 ticks to make the score 9-3 by 9:04. The Lyons held a 15-3 advantage at halftime.

McNamara finished with six goals and three assists, doing all of his damage in the first half. Cederberg added four markers and three helpers, and sophomore Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) turned in a hat trick, as the pair joined McNamara in appearing only on man-up opportunities during the second half.

Freshman Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, MA/Bancroft School) totaled three goals and two assists, while sophomore Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) had a pair of markers and one assist. Junior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) collected two helpers, and classmate Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made two saves in earning the victory.

Also for Wheaton, junior Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School), sophomore Peter Buongiorno (Pittsburgh, PA/Winchester Thurston School) and freshman David Schroeder (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) had a goal and an assist apiece, with Buongiorno netting his first collegiate tally. Senior Chris Gogan-Tilstone (Amherst, NH/Souhegan), junior Andrew Brunhofer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and freshman Conor Finn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) each scored once.

The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team advanced to its second straight Pilgrim League Tournament championship game last week, coming up shy of earning its initial league crown and NCAA Tournament bid. The second-seeded Lyons downed visiting number-three Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 14-7 in a semifinal on Wednesday before suffering a 12-7 setback at top seed Springfield College, the eight-time league champ. The Lyons host number-seven Becker College on Wednesday.

The Blue and White used a 6-0 run in the third quarter to blow open a one-goal game against MIT. Sophomore Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) tallied five goals, freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) had a hat trick and one assist, and sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) turned in a goal and four helpers. Senior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) was 7-for-9 on face-offs, and junior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made 15 saves. Wheaton, which has the nation's eighth-best man-up offense, went 3-for-5 with the man advantage, and the 14 goals were the most it had scored in a Pilgrim tournament contest.

At Springfield, sophomore Duncan Smith (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) put the Lyons on top 4:13 into the game, and the teams stood tied at one early in the second quarter before a 4-0 Pride run put the hosts on top for good. A 4-1 Wheaton run made it 10-6 early in the fourth, but Springfield scored two of the final three tallies. Smith finished with a hat trick, Cederberg tallied twice, and Schaffer notched a goal and a helper. Horn made 19 saves, while the Lyons were 2-for-3 in man-up situations. Wheaton held Springfield to its smallest margin of victory against Pilgrim teams. After falling by a 14-3 count during the regular season in Wheaton's initial league game under first-year head coach Brian Endicott, the Lyons limited an attack that had produced at least 22 goals in four of its last five league games, including netting 24 in the semifinals against Babson College.

Horn is tied for fifth in program history in single-season wins (7), Gomer is sixth in ground balls (71) and seventh in face-off victories (90), while Cederberg is seventh in assists (22) with the most by a Lyon in seven years. Gomer is first in school annals in career ground balls (275), second in face-off wins (402) and tied for third in games (59). Senior Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) is first in games (62), having eclipsed Richie Rasamny's '08 record during the Pilgrim League Tournament final, and is sixth in ground balls (120). Horn is fourth in saves (366) and wins (15), Garceau is fifth in face-off wins (168), and Schaffer is eighth in assists (44).

The Wheaton men's lacrosse team seeks its initial ECAC New England Tournament title this week, as the second-seeded Lyons begin their quest on Wednesday against number-seven Becker in a first-round game at Mirrione Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team seeks its initial Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Tournament title this week, as the second-seeded Lyons begin their quest on Wednesday against number-seven Becker College in a first-round game at Mirrione Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

At 7-7 under first-year head coach Brian Endicott, Wheaton is making its fourth ECAC appearance and first since 2006, while the Hawks are 9-3. Nationally-ranked Endicott College, which is the top seed and will receive a first-round bye in the seven-team field, hosts the semifinals on Saturday and the final on Sunday. Other first-round games are third-seeded New England College hosting number-six Castleton State College and fourth seed Plymouth State University welcoming fifth-seeded Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The Lyons are 3-3 in ECAC Tournament play after winning their opening-round games in 2002, 2004 and 2006. With a four-team field three years ago, the Blue and White advanced to its first final. Since an 0-6 start, Wheaton has won seven of its last eight contests, including matching a program record with seven consecutive wins. Finishing second in the Pilgrim League at 6-1, the Lyons reached their second straight title game for the first time in school history before falling at perennial conference power Springfield College, 12-7.

Wheaton averages over 10 goals, which ranks second in the eight-team Pilgrim, but also boasts the nation's fifth-best man-up defense, allowing just 10 tallies in 63 attempts. The Lyons are also impressive on the offensive end of man-up opportunities, converting 35 goals on 76 chances. Wheaton stands eighth in Division III in man-up offense. Ranked second in the Pilgrim in scoring offense, the Lyons are third in scoring defense, allowing 10.43 goals per contest.

A balanced scoring attack features eight different players who have recorded at least 10 goals, as the Lyons are led by a trio of underclassmen. Sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) has tallied 45 points on 23 goals and 22 assists, recording the most single-season helpers by a Lyon in seven years. Freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) owns a team-best 24 goals, while sophomore Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) has 22.

Junior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) has netted 13 goals while handing out 15 assists. Senior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), who is the program's all-time ground balls leader and ranks second in face-off wins, has 71 ground balls this year and is 90-for-165 in face-offs, good for a .545 winning percentage. His ground ball total ranks sixth in program annals, while he is seventh in face-off victories. Junior Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) has won 56.2 percent of his face-off tries, going 72-for-128, and has 11 goals and 39 ground balls.

Senior Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) and sophomores Phil Chapman (Shaker Heights, OH/Western Reserve Academy) and Cody Powers (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) are the only three players to have started all 14 games. Barbone and Chapman have sided with sophomore Garrett McLean (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) in forming Wheaton's starting defensive unit for most of the season, while Powers has served as the team's starting long-stick midfielder, scooping up 46 ground balls. Junior goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) is tied for fifth in program history in single-season wins, going 7-5 with a 9.83 goals against average and .548 save percentage.

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The second-seeded Wheaton College men's lacrosse team hung tough with Pilgrim League heavyweight Springfield College before falling shy of earning its first conference crown, suffering a 12-7 setback to the top seed on Saturday during the tournament title game on Stagg Field.

In a rematch of the 2008 championship contest, the Lyons slipped to 7-7 in seeing their program-record-tying seven-contest winning streak end. Wheaton, which had not fallen since April 1, awaits a possible Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament berth. Now 11-6, Springfield won its eighth league crown and earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The Lyons held the Pride to its smallest margin of victory against Pilgrim teams. After falling by a 14-3 count during the regular season in Wheaton's initial league game under first-year head coach Brian Endicott, the Lyons limited an attack that had produced at least 22 goals in four of its last five league games, including netting 24 in the semifinals against Babson College.

Sophomore Duncan Smith (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) put the visitors on top at 10:47 of the first quarter before Springfield came back to tie 2:10 later. The teams were still deadlocked after the first horn, as the Lyons clamped down on a team that had averaged 9.8 first-quarter goals in its past five conference contests, including recording 16 during the opening period in the semifinals.

Springfield finished off a 5-0 run at 5:27 of the second before sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) scored for the Lyons with 1:32 to go, but the Pride tallied the last marker of the half to take a 6-2 advantage into the intermission. Wheaton held the hosts to a season-low-tying goal total for an opening half during league action, as Springfield had averaged 16 in the first half of its prior five Pilgrim contests.

By 9:54 of the third, Springfield had grabbed a 9-3 advantage, but Smith scored at 9:08 before Cederberg deposited a man-up tally at 8:24. Neither team scored during the remainder of the period, and Smith countered a goal early in the fourth to make it 10-6 with 10:48 left in regulation. However, the hosts tallied twice more to lead by six with 4:29 to go, and junior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) created the final margin with a man-up goal at 2:28.

Smith finished with a hat trick for the Lyons, Cederberg had a pair of tallies, and Schaffer notched a goal and an assist. Junior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made 19 saves between the pipes, as he faced 55 Springfield shots. Wheaton's man-advantage offense, the eighth best in the nation, went 2-for-3 in the game.

Senior Pat Cavanaugh (Wayland, MA/Wayland) tallied a game-high four goals for the Pride, while classmate Jake Beebe (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) had two goals and two assists. Senior Tom Albano (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) made 14 stops.

The Wheaton men's lacrosse team advanced to its second Pilgrim League Tournament title game in as many years on Wednesday, as the second-seeded Lyons downed visiting third seed MIT, 14-7 during a semifinal round game at Mirrione Stadium.

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team advanced to its second Pilgrim League Tournament title game in as many years on Wednesday, as the second-seeded Lyons downed visiting third seed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 14-7 during a semifinal round game at Mirrione Stadium.

Matching the 13-year-old program record of seven straight wins while posting the most goals given up by MIT all season, Wheaton improved to 7-6 and will face the winner of tonight's other semifinal between top seed Springfield College and number-four Babson College on Saturday at the highest remaining seed at 1:00 p.m. The Blue and White seeks its first league title, while the Engineers finished their season at 7-8.

After having to overcome four deficits during last Wednesday's 9-7 win at MIT, the Lyons never trailed during the teams' first league tournament meeting. Junior Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) provided the hosts with a 1-0 lead not even three minutes into the first, connecting on a feed from sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) at 12:04.

The first quarter's final two goals came in a 10-second span. MIT senior Ryan Ballentine (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) found classmate Neil Zimmerman (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) for a game-tying score at 1:10, but at the one-minute mark, Cederberg assisted sophomore Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy), giving the Lyons a 2-1 edge heading into the second period.

After the two teams exchanged goals to start the second, Wheaton scored the next two over 2:59, including Landers' second tally at 2:47, to make the score 5-2. With 12 ticks on the clock, Ballentine brought the Engineers to within two on a pass from senior Dylan Roden (Bellport, NY/Bellport).

Roden kept the pressure on by scoring 55 seconds into the third and narrowing MIT's deficit to 5-4 before the Lyons gained control. Wheaton went on a 5-0, period-ending run to secure a comfortable 10-4 advantage, with Landers beginning the flurry by picking up the hat trick at 9:33 before eventually capping the stretch with his fourth goal at the 11-second mark. Cederberg, Garceau and freshman Conor Finn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) also tallied during the run.

The hosts stayed on the attack to begin the fourth, as the nation's eighth-best man-up offense converted at 14:09, with Cederberg assisting freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) for an 11-4 Lyon advantage. Three different Engineers found the back of the net over 3:47, with Ballentine playing a hand in two markers, to make it 11-7 before Wheaton countered with three goals of its own, including the last two on man-up opportunities. McNamara had back-to-back tallies in a 1:50 span, while Landers capped the scoring at 2:54.

Landers led all scorers with five goals, Cederberg accounted for five points on a goal and four assists, while McNamara had a hat trick and one helper. Garceau scored twice, junior Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) turned in a goal and two assists, and classmate Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) had two helpers. Junior goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) was impressive between the pipes with 15 stops, including six in the fourth.

For MIT, Ballentine totaled two goals and a pair of assists, while Roden finished with two tallies and one helper. Junior Garth Grove (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) had 11 saves.

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's lacrosse sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) was named Pilgrim League Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, April 26, as he recorded five goals and three assists last week while playing a major part in the Lyons winning twice and clinching the second seed in the conference tournament.

Cederberg had a hat trick and an assist during a 9-7 win at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Wednesday, as each of his points came on a goal that erased an Engineer lead. His man-up tally at the nine-minute mark of the fourth quarter knotted the contest at six and sparked a 4-0 run, which put the Lyons ahead for good.

In Wheaton's 12-11 win at Babson College on Sunday, the attackman had two goals and two assists. He assisted an early tying marker, scored to give the Lyons a second-quarter lead and made it 10-10 early in the fourth period with another goal. Cederberg later assisted the game-winner with 2:24 to go in regulation, helping Wheaton finish 6-1 in league play.

The weekly honor was Cederberg's first as a collegian and first for a Wheaton player since last April 28. In his sophomore season, he paces the Lyons in points (38) and assists (18) while having scored 20 goals to come within one of the team lead.

Since an 0-6 start, Wheaton has won six straight, matching the program's longest winning streak since 1996 to draw within one triumph of the school record. The Lyons are slated to host a Pilgrim League Tournament semifinal in consecutive years for the first time in program history, as second-seeded Wheaton takes on number-three MIT on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
