A trio of Wheaton field hockey players was tabbed to NFHCA all-region teams, including senior co-captain Cassie Abel's selection to the New England East Region first team for the initial time in her career.

NORTON, MA- A trio of Wheaton College field hockey players was tabbed to National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) all-region teams, including senior co-captain Cassie Abel's (Windham, NH/Salem) selection to the New England East Region first team for the initial time in her career.

Senior co-captain Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) picked up all-region accolades for the second time in as many seasons, being named to the second team after earning first-team honors as a junior, while junior Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable), who also drew second-team laurels, garnered her initial award.

Having at least three players named to an all-region team for the fourth straight year, Wheaton was one of six schools to place at least three players on the teams, joining New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Babson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Wellesley College and non-league members Nichols College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine.

Cassie Abel

Abel, who completed her career tied for second in program history in games played (80), started in 17 games and anchored a defense that held opponents to one goal or less seven times. She served as the trailer on defensive penalty corners for a team that allowed nine goals on 144 attempts. Offensively, she notched assists in two non-league wins before tallying a goal and a helper during a one-goal loss to Babson.

Alex Block

Joining Abel with 80 career games played, Block stands fifth in school annals in goals (23) and points (55) after notching three tallies, two assists and a pair of defensive saves during 18 starts from her midfield spot this fall. As the inserter on offensive corners and strong trail on defensive corners, Block combined to score twice and assist a goal in three non-league wins before providing a tally and a helper at Babson. Her defensive saves came against league tournament champion MIT and then-nationally-ranked William Smith College.

Jessica Strock

A starting forward in 18 games after missing all but one contest as a sophomore, Strock finished second on the team with 17 points and was tied for second in both goals (7) and assists (3). She recorded multiple points in six games, including tallying the game-winning goal at Lasell College. In the six games that Strock scored, Wheaton went 6-0.

As a team, the Lyons won three of their first four games and five of their initial eight before finishing the fall with a 6-12 record, including a 2-6 mark in the conference. Wheaton advanced to its ninth consecutive NEWMAC Tournament.

WORCESTER, MA- Wheaton College field hockey senior back Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) was awarded a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league honor for the first time in her career during Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She was named to the second team.

A starter in all but one of Wheaton's 18 games, Abel anchored a Lyon defense that limited opponents scoring to no more than one goal seven times, including against four conference teams. During the regular season, Wheaton's defense surrendered 15 goals in league play, just two shy of the NEWMAC leader.

Abel served as the trailer on defensive penalty corners for a team that yielded nine goals on 144 attempts. On the offensive side of the field, she provided assists in two non-conference victories over River College and Simmons College before contributing a goal and a helper in a 3-2 loss at league foe Babson College.

Tied for second at Wheaton in career games played with 80, Abel helped lead the Lyons into the NEWMAC Tournament, where they fell to top seed Wellesley College. Wheaton finished the fall with a 6-12 overall record and a 2-6 league mark.

Field Hockey (6-12, 2-6) Squad's Season Comes to a Close, Lyons Fall Twice at Wellesley

The Wheaton College field hockey team lost twice last week at Wellesley College, getting bounced from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the third straight year by the Blue and for the fifth time in six seasons. The Lyons dropped their regular season finale, 3-1 on Tuesday before, as the eighth seed, suffering a 4-1 setback to top-seeded Wellesley.

Sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) scored in the 67th minute on Tuesday to cut the Wellesley lead to 2-1 before the hosts tallied once more. Senior keeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made 13 saves, while sophomore back Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug Valley) turned in a defensive save early in the second half with her team down just 1-0.

Junior Margaux Bolte (Belmont, MA/Belmont) staked the underdog Lyons to a 1-0 halftime advantage during the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament after scoring in the 33rd minute, but Wellesley responded with a big second half. Bagley made 12 stops for Wheaton in her final contest.

Senior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) completed her career fifth in program history in career goals (23) and points (55), while she and classmate Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) tied for second in games (80). Bagley finished fifth in wins (18), tied for fifth in shutouts (8), sixth in minutes (2,802:58), and seventh in both saves (315) and goals against average (1.87). Asack was fifth in single-season points (31), tied for fifth in goals (12) and tied for seventh in assists (7), as her goal and point totals were program records for an underclassman. Bagley was sixth in minutes (1,271:47) this fall.

The eighth-seeded Wheaton field hockey team succumbed to four second-half goals during a NEWMAC Tournament first-round game at top seed Wellesley on Saturday, as the Lyons saw their title quest come to an end at the hands of the Blue for the third straight season.

WELLESLEY, MA- The eighth-seeded Wheaton College field hockey team succumbed to four second-half goals during a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament first-round game at top seed Wellesley College on Saturday, as the Lyons saw their title quest come to an end at the hands of the Blue for the third straight season.

Wheaton finishes the year at 6-12, while Wellesley advances to the semifinal round to face five-time defending tournament champion Springfield College, which is the fourth seed. The Blue, which has downed the Lyons in five of the past six postseasons, is 12-7.

Junior Margaux Bolte's (Belmont, MA/Belmont) 33rd-minute goal and senior goalie Andrea Bagley's (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) eight first-half saves provided the Lyons with a 1-0 lead at the intermission, but the second stanza was a different story, as the Blue finished with four goals in a 24:07 span and a 14-4 advantage in shots to seal the win.

Bagley finished her career with 12 stops in the game, as Wellesley held advantages of 32-13 in shots and 10-5 in penalty corners. Two of the Blue's tallies came off corners, as Wheaton had allowed just seven penalty-corner markers in 17 regular season games. Wellesley junior goalkeeper Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) accounted for nine saves.

Senior Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA/Bancroft School) scored twice for the Blue, while junior Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA/Pingree School) contributed a goal and an assist. Senior Molly Morrow (Bow, NH/Bow) also scored.

Bagley turned aside six Wellesley shots in the early going before Bolte's blast from 10 yards out after faking a defender put the Lyons on the board just 2:21 before the break. Bagley made a save at 37:34 of the second half, but the Blue knotted the contest 31 ticks later courtesy of a penalty corner. Morrow posted Wellesley's game-winner at 49:59.

The Lyons are 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the league, while the Blue improved to 11-7 and 6-2.

Sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) scored for Wheaton, as she extended her own school records for underclassmen to 12 goals and 31 points. Senior keeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made 13 stops, while sophomore Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug Valley) recorded a defensive save.

Three different players scored for the Blue, while junior Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) had one stop in the Wellesley net. The hosts held advantages of 25-7 in shots and 13-2 in penalty corners.

Despite being outshot 14-3 in the opening half, Wheaton nearly broke on the board first, but senior Alex Block's (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) blast hit the inside of the post in the 24th minute. The Blue responded with 10 of the opening half's final 11 shots, with the hosts scoring with 57 seconds left in the stanza.

Davies denied Wellesley a 2-0 advantage with a defensive save in the 39th minute, but Wellesley went ahead by two at the 54-minute mark. After Sawyer stopped a Lyon try early in the 67th minute, Asack was there for the rebound, cutting Wheaton's deficit to 2-1 with 3:55 remaining in regulation. However, the Blue tallied the final marker just 17 seconds later.

The Lyons will find out later tonight who they play in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Saturday, as eighth-seeded Wheaton will either travel to Wellesley or Clark University for the postseason contest.

Freshman Kimberly Barker scored 2:45 into overtime to lift MIT past Wheaton, 1-0 on Tuesday in a NEWMAC field hockey contest on Clark Field during the Lyons' regular season home finale.

NORTON, MA- Freshman Kimberly Barker (Camden, NY/Camden) scored 2:45 into overtime to lift Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) past Wheaton College, 1-0 on Tuesday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey contest on Clark Field during the Lyons' regular season home finale.

Wheaton received 19 saves from senior keeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and a pair of defensive stops by teammates, as the Blue and White limited an offense that entered the contest averaging nearly four goals. The Lyons slipped to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the league, as each of their last five losses have come by a single goal. MIT improved to 12-4 and 3-3, recording its highest overall win total since 1998.

Senior midfielder Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and sophomore back Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug Valley) each made defensive saves for the Lyons, while MIT junior keeper Keri Dixon (Bethlehem, PA/Singapore American School) collected four saves in net. The Engineers held advantages of 28-5 in shots and 11-8 in penalty corners.

MIT had a handful of chances early in the contest, firing off four consecutive shots during one sequence in the fifth minute, but Bagley saved each attempt. Wheaton junior Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) had her team's best opportunity in the opening period but was stopped by Dixon with fewer than two minutes remaining.

Wheaton's defense continued to come up big in the second half, as Block made a defensive save of senior Ekavali Mishra's (Washington, DC/Sidwell Friends School) shot in the 41st minute before Bagley denied a point-blank shot from the middle of the circle at 47:40.

During the 52nd minute, Strock deflected freshman Gillian Mann's (Burlington, VT/Williston Northampton School) hit just right of the cage, and Bagley came up with a big save at the other end moments later, rushing out to stop a shot by sophomore Kameron Klauber (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad). Classmate Anna Teruya (Hockessin, DE/Tower Hill School) later swept a back-hander toward the right post, but Davies recorded a defensive stop at 53:30.

Strock had a pair of shots stopped by Dixon with a little more than eight minutes to go in regulation, and the teams headed to overtime. On MIT's third corner of the extra period, the Engineers cycled the ball to the right side of the circle and Barker, who whiffed on an attempt before knocking in the winning marker, with Bagley rushing out to deny a try.

Wheaton hits the road for its final two regular season contests, beginning on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. game against Smith College at Enrico Fermi High School in Connecticut.
