Women's Soccer (15-2-1, 6-1-1) Notches Pair of Wins, Moves Into Tie for NEWMAC Lead
The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is receiving national votes and ranked fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), went 2-0 during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play last week, moving into a tie for first with Wellesley College after downing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2-0 on Tuesday and Smith College, 2-0 on Saturday. The Lyons, who have clinched the right to host a league tournament first-round game for the 15th consecutive season, host Wellesley during their NEWMAC finale on Tuesday. Wheaton seeks at least a share of its 11th straight regular season conference crown before the Lyons host a first-round contest on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against a team to be determined.
With 13 shutouts, the Lyons have now posted at least that many for the 11th straight season. Wheaton has blanked its last four opponents and nine of its last 10 while allowing only two goals in the last 946:53 over 11 contests since September 23.
At MIT, junior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) scored at the 76-minute mark before freshman Cassey Muse (Candia, NH/Central) tallied an insurance marker with 2:06 left. Senior Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) assisted Muse's goal, while sophomore Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) made three saves.
Muse converted a Hough touch for the 32nd-minute winner against visiting Smith. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbull, CT/Notre Dame Catholic) later scored off the rebound of senior Lyndsey McManus' (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) blast, and Leddy earned the win behind one save in 78:38. Sophomore Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) had one stop in 11:22.
Hough is tied for seventh in program history in career assists (32), eighth in points (92) and tied for ninth in goals (30). Leddy is third in shutouts (16), fifth in wins (27) and seventh in minutes (3,336:05). Muse has 15 goals, the third-highest freshman total in program history, and has netted eight winners. Leddy is seventh in single-season wins (14) and is tied for eighth in shutouts (6).
