Field Hockey (6-10, 2-5) Splits Pair, Earns Spot in Upcoming NEWMAC Tournament
The Wheaton College field hockey team went 1-1 last week, qualifying for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament by virtue of its 2-0 victory against Smith College at Enrico Fermi High School in Connecticut on Saturday. The Lyons also suffered a 1-0 setback in overtime to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Tuesday, as all five of Wheaton's league losses have come by one goal. The Lyons, who advanced to the semifinals during each of the past two NEWMAC Tournaments, begin postseason play on Saturday at an opponent to be determined.
Senior keeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made 19 saves against visiting MIT, but the Engineers tallied 2:45 into overtime. Classmate Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and sophomore Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug Valley) each added defensive saves.
The Lyons scored twice in a 4:41 span midway through the opening half for the only scoring against Smith. Junior Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) and sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) provided the goals, while Bagley made nine saves for the shutout.
Block is fifth in program history in career goals (23) and points (55), while she and senior Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) are tied for fourth in games (78). Bagley is fifth in wins (18), tied for fifth in shutouts (8), and stands sixth in minutes (2,662:58) and seventh in saves (290). Asack is fifth in single-season points (29), sixth in goals (11) and tied for seventh in assists (7).
