Men's Soccer (13-3-1, 3-1) Posts 2-0 Mark, Remains Second in NEWMAC Standings

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is receiving votes from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and ranked fourth in the New England poll, went 2-0 last week, first clipping host Clark University, 1-0 on Saturday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest before blanking visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 2-0 on Sunday. With two NEWMAC games left, the Lyons are second in the seven-team league, as the top seed earns a first-round bye, while the second through fourth seeds host opening-round contests.

At Clark, sophomore midfielder Chris Thomas (Cumberland, ME/Phillips Academy) netted his first goal of the season in the 17th minute, sending the Lyons to victory. Wheaton improved to 15-2-1 all time against the Cougars, as the loser in contests between the schools has now been blanked 13 times. Junior Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made three saves.

In their first meeting, Wheaton pushed past Saint Joseph's on a rainy day with two second-half tallies. Junior midfielder Kyle Sye (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) netted his first marker of the fall at 70:06, and classmate Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) scored off a Thomas assist in the 83rd minute. Davidson made two stops for the shutout.

Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) is fourth in program history in career goals (32) and ninth in points (70), while Solomon is tied for seventh in assists (21). Davidson is fifth in wins (23), shutouts (13) and minutes (3,762:53) and sixth in saves (153), while junior Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) is seventh in victories (13). With 13 goals this season, Moreira has set a career high while tying for fifth in program history. Among them, six are game-winners. Davidson's six shutouts tie him for sixth in a single season at Wheaton.
