Women's Soccer (12-2, 3-1) Splits NEWMAC Pair, Narrowly Falls in Title Game Rematch
The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is receiving national votes and is ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) New England poll, went 1-1 on the road in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action last week, downing Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), 5-0 on Tuesday before dropping a rematch of last year's league tournament championship game at Springfield College, 2-1 on Saturday.
Junior Alessia Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton South) deposited a 43rd-minute penalty kick for the game-winner at WPI. Senior Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) turned in a goal and an assist, while junior Christina Bertrand (Agawam, MA/Cathedral) and freshmen Samantha Cronin (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) and Cassey Muse (Candia, NH/Central) also found the back of the net. Cronin's marker was her first as a collegian. Sophomore keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) made one save in a little more than 77 minutes before classmate Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) completed the shutout by recording a stop.
The Lyons suffered a narrow loss to Springfield, which is ranked fifth in the region. Wheaton, which had blanked five straight opponents, saw its shutout streak end at 492:31 en route to falling behind 2-0. McManus scored in the 77th minute, but the visitors came no closer. Leddy made two stops.
Junior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) is eighth in program history in career points (89), tied for eighth in assists (31) and stands 10th in goals (29). Leddy is tied for fourth in shutouts (13), tied for fifth in wins (24) and stands seventh in minutes (2,966:17).
