Field Hockey (5-7, 1-2) Suffers Pair of 1-0 Home Losses During NEWMAC Play

The Wheaton College field hockey team suffered two 1-0 setbacks at home during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action last week, falling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Tuesday before coming up short against five-time defending league tournament champion Springfield College on Saturday. It marked the first time the Lyons lost consecutive 1-0 contests since October 1997 and the first such instance in back-to-back home games since October 1994.

Wheaton and WPI played to a one-goal decision for the fourth time in five years, as senior keeper Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made four saves. The Lyons finished with advantages of 14-11 in shots and 14-7 in penalty corners.

The Lyons capped a six-game homestand, their longest since opening the 1991 season with eight consecutive home contests, by coming up just short against Springfield. Bagley collected 10 saves, while junior back Ashley English (Watertown, MA/Watertown) made a late defensive save.

Senior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) is tied for fifth in program history in career goals (22) and tied for seventh in points (52), while she and classmate Cassie Abel (Windham, NH/Salem) are tied for eighth in games (74). Bagley is tied for fifth in wins (17) while standing sixth in shutouts (7) and seventh in saves (242) and minutes (2,371:11). With 24 points, sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton) is tied for eighth in single-season points while sitting tied for ninth with six assists.
