Women's Tennis (7-2, 3-1) Splits Pair of NEWMAC Matches, Snaps Wellesley's Streak

The Wheaton College women's tennis team, which is ranked 12th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, went 1-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play last week, including downing nationally-ranked Wellesley College, 7-2 on Tuesday to snap the Blue's 47-match league winning streak. Wellesley is also the five-time defending NEWMAC Tournament champion. The Lyons suffered a 6-3 setback at Smith College on Saturday. Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) are the 11th-ranked doubles team in the region, while Teague is 15th in singles and Geocaris is 22nd.

Geocaris swept her singles match over a nationally-ranked foe to clinch Wheaton's win over Wellesley, which was ranked 20th nationally and sixth in the Northeast. Geocaris and Teague highlighted doubles play by defeating a nationally-ranked tandem, 8-0, while Lyon duos of senior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem)/sophomore Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) and junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional)/sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) also won. A Chesky singles victory gave the Lyons their fourth point, and Geocaris notched her win before Knies and Teague each won in three sets.

Against Smith, Chesky and DiOrio each won their singles matches in straight sets, while the doubles tandem of Chesky/Geocaris was victorious.
