Men's Soccer (11-2-1, 2-0) Remains Undefeated in NEWMAC Play During 2-1 Week
The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is ranked 13th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), went 2-1 at home last week, including knocking off the United States Coast Guard Academy, 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Wheaton slipped against regionally-ranked Wesleyan University, 1-0 on Tuesday but capped the week with a 3-0 victory over Husson University. Thirteen different players have scored this fall after a total of 10 did so in 2008.
For the eighth time in as many meetings, Wheaton held Wesleyan to no more than a goal, but the visitors tallied in the 28th minute for the contest's lone marker. Junior Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made four stops against the Cardinals, who were ranked fourth in the region.
Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) tallied in the 102nd minute to down Coast Guard. Classmate Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) scored off freshman Cecil Jeffrey's (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) assist, while Davidson had one stop.
Against Husson, Moreira again tallied the game-winner during his team's three-goal second half. Solomon assisted Moreira and freshman Max Swanson (Lexington, MA/Lexington) 2:14 apart during the stanza before senior Matt Snider (Topsham, ME/Mount Ararat) padded Wheaton's lead off touches from sophomore Matt Solomon (Avon, CT/Avon Old Farms) and freshman Gabe Reich (Brookline, MA/Beaver Country Day School) in the 81st minute. Junior Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) made five saves while working the shutout.
Moreira is fourth in program history in career goals (32) and ninth in points (70), while Solomon is tied for seventh in assists (21). Davidson is fifth in minutes (3,492:53) and sixth in each wins (21), saves (142) and shutouts (11), while Smart is seventh in victories (13). With 13 goals this season, Moreira has set a career high while tying for fifth in program history. Among them, six are game-winners.
