Women's Tennis (6-1, 2-0) Wins Trio of Matches, Blanks Pair of Opponents During Week
The Wheaton College women's tennis team, which is ranked 12th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, yielded only one point while going 3-0 at home last week, including downing Springfield College, 8-1 on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Lyons blanked defending The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament champion Endicott College, 9-0 on Wednesday and closed the week with a 9-0 shutout of Union College on Sunday. Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) are the 11th-ranked doubles team in the region, while Teague is 15th in singles and Geocaris is 22nd.
Wheaton rolled past 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifier Endicott. Geocaris, Teague, senior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem), junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomores Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) all won in singles. During doubles, the tandems of Geocaris/Teague, DiOrio/Knies and Chesky/Van Faasen were each victorious.
Against Springfield, Chesky, DiOrio, Geocaris, Knies and Teague won their singles matches in straight sets, while the duos of Geocaris/Teague, DiOrio/Knies and Chesky/Van Faasen were triumphant.
DiOrio, Geocaris, Knies, Teague and Van Faasen recorded straight-set singles wins over Union foes, while Chesky won a pro set. During doubles, Wheaton's duos of Geocaris/Teague, DiOrio/Knies and Chesky/Van Faasen all corralled victories.
