Women's Soccer (9-1, 1-0) Goes 2-1 During Week, Opens NEWMAC Play with Victory

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is ranked 13th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), posted a 2-1 mark last week, including winning its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener at Mount Holyoke College, 2-0 on Saturday. The Lyons suffered their first defeat of the fall at perennial regional power Tufts University, 2-0 on Wednesday but notched a 5-0 win on Sunday against visiting Husson University, the ninth-ranked squad in New England.

Wheaton outshot the Jumbos, 11-9, but the hosts scored in the 56th and 65th minutes. Sophomore keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) made two saves.

Senior Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) provided a goal and an assist at Mount Holyoke, including assisting freshman Cassey Muse's (Candia, NH/Central) 26th-minute game-winner. McManus tallied off junior Emily Hough's (Norwich, VT/Hanover) 69th-minute helper, while sophomore Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) made two saves during the opening half for her first win in her initial collegiate start. Leddy provided one second-period stop.

McManus played a hand in four goals against 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifier Husson, scoring twice and assisting two more. Muse, senior Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School) and freshman Brittany Odgers (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) also scored, while Leddy made two saves in nearly 74 minutes. Cawley picked up one stop in relief.

Hough is eighth in program history in career points (89), tied for eighth in assists (31) and stands 10th in goals (29). Leddy is sixth in wins (21) and shutouts (12) and seventh in minutes (2,631:39).
