Men's Soccer (9-1-1, 1-0) Posts Pair of Non-League Wins, Extends Streak Against Brandeis
The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) national poll and stands fourth in New England, went 2-0 on the road last week, notching a 7-2 win at Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday before blanking Brandeis University, 3-0 on Saturday to extend its unbeaten streak against the Judges to 14 games. Twelve different Wheaton players have already scored this fall after a total of 10 did so in 2008.
Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) tallied seven points behind a hat trick and an assist at Eastern Nazarene, notching the most points by a Lyon since Dan Antoniuk '03 on September 30, 2000. He also joined Antoniuk as the second Wheaton player with two career hat tricks despite playing a little more than 20 minutes. Junior Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional), sophomore Conor Finn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) and freshman Malcolm Eaton (Ayer, MA/Saint Paul's School) also scored, with Eaton's going down as his first in college fewer than three minutes after entering his initial game. Senior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) added a pair of assists, while junior keepers Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) and Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) combined on four saves.
Moreira, Sussman and sophomore Pablo Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/American School of El Salvador) scored at Brandeis, while Solomon had a pair of assists. Davidson turned aside six shots.
Moreira is sixth in program history in career goals (30) and 10th in points (66), while Solomon is tied for eighth in assists (19). Davidson is fifth in minutes (3,301:34) and sixth in each wins (20), saves (137) and shutouts (11), while Smart is seventh in victories (12).
