Men's and Women's Track & Field Squads Compete at NCAA New England Meet
The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track & field teams recorded five NCAA Championship standards, three event wins and one school record over the weekend at the NCAA Division III New England Championship. The Lyon women took fifth, while the men were 12th.
Freshman Mickey Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) had a hand in two NCAA provisional marks and a pair of event victories, winning the triple jump while joining junior Renee Thompson (Hartford, CT/Weaver), sophomore Laurenmaria Smith (Providence, RI/Hope) and freshman twin sister Didine Jusme (Providence, RI/Classical) on the top 4×100-meter relay team. Mickey Jusme nearly notched a third provisional mark, coming within 1/2″ in the long jump while placing third. Senior Morgan Jamiel (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) took third in the heptathlon, while Thompson was fourth in the 200M and fifth in the 400M. Sophomore Erin Neville (North Providence, RI/La Salle Academy) came within 3/4″ of an NCAA standard during a fourth-place high jump, and freshman Tope Waheed (East Providence, RI/East Providence) was fourth in the hammer throw.
Junior Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) paced the men with the top finish and an NCAA time in the 110M hurdles, while senior Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) and freshman Cailean Robinson (Newton, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy), who each qualified provisionally in the 100M preliminaries, went two-three in the event finals. Wright's trials time of 10.71 nipped an eight-year-old school record held by Lance Wagner '04 by 0.01 seconds. Wheaton's 4×400M relay team, comprised of senior Brian Dundon (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield), sophomore Mark Williamson (Vienna, VA/James Madison) and first-year athletes Kyle Ricci (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) and Dylan Treivush (Beverly Hills, CA/Harvard-Westlake School), placed fifth.
