Haugh earns top rookie honors, five Lyons draw all-league accolades

WORCESTER, MA- The Wheaton College baseball team had five players named to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league teams during Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), while freshman Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint John's Prep) became the third Lyon to be named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year.

Wheaton had the maximum of five all-league players for the fifth straight season, as seniors Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) and Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West), junior Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) and sophomore Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) each landed on the first team, while junior Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) was a second-squad pick.

Thanks to Haugh's accolade, Wheaton has garnered at least one major award from the NEWMAC each year in the league's 11-season history. Haugh joined Chris Denorfia '02, a current member of the Oakland Athletics' 40-man roster, and Scott Guillerault '08 in drawing top rookie honors. Wheaton's starting third baseman in all 37 games, Haugh paces NEWMAC first-year players in hits (51), runs (34), RBI (37) and total bases (80) while tying for first in home runs (6). He's also second in walks (19) and assists (72) and third in slugging percentage (.559). Among all conference players, Haugh is tied for second in home runs, third in RBI and total bases, tied for sixth in hits, seventh in runs, tied for eighth in walks, tied for ninth in assists and 10th in slugging percentage. Haugh has notched 17 multi-hit games while at one point recording a 12-game hitting streak.

Wheaton's starting shortstop in 36 of 37 games, Pecora is first in the league in hits (61), runs (45) and doubles (18), second in total bases (93), assists (120) and double plays turned (28), fourth in slugging percentage (.608), fifth in batting average (.399) and sixth in on-base percentage (.475). While turning in 20 multi-hit outings, he also recorded a 14-game hitting streak at one point. The league leader in saves (8), Simmons has yielded only three runs in 22.2 innings while recording 33 of his 68 outs via strikeouts, allowing just four extra-base hits and posting scoreless outings during 15 appearances. Seven of Simmons' saves required him to record at least four outs. While tying for first in the league in games finished (16) and placing second in appearances and relief outings (18), Simmons also ranks sixth in strikeouts (33).

Malaguti is second in the league in batting average (.434) and on-base percentage (.519), tied for second in runs (38), third in hits (56), tied for fourth in sacrifice flies (4), fifth in total bases (77), fifth in home runs (5), tied for fifth in times hit by a pitch (8), sixth in slugging percentage (.597) and tied for eighth in walks (19). He has started all 37 games thus far in left field, turning in 21 multiple-hit games while at one point recording a 13-game hitting streak. Wheaton's starting DH and cleanup hitter in all 37 games, Munley has collected 14 multi-hit outings and 14 multi-RBI performances while turning in at least one hit in 10 of 12 NEWMAC games. Munley is first in the league in RBI (46) and walks (26), fourth in hits (54) and total bases (79), tied for fourth in doubles (11) and sac flies (4), seventh in batting average (.386) and on-base percentage (.471), and ninth in slugging percentage (.564).

The starting catcher in 36 games, Lieneck has had 16 multi-hit games. He is first in the league in sac bunts (8), tied for first in times hit by a pitch (11), tied for second in runs (38), third in total chances (277) and putouts (250), fourth in RBI (36), fifth in runners caught stealing (8), tied for sixth in hits (51) and home runs (4), and seventh in total bases (72). He has had just two passed balls and caught 25 percent of potential base stealers.

The Lyons, who tied for first in the NEWMAC standings at 9-3, are 28-9 overall and are ranked 15th nationally. They earned a share of their 10th regular season league title and return to action today against Rhode Island College. First pitch in Norton is set for 3:30 p.m.
