BRISTOL, RI- The Wheaton College baseball team strung together nine straight runs during the middle three innings while overcoming a four-run deficit at Roger Williams University en route to a 10-7 victory on Thursday afternoon at Paolino Field.
Ranked third nationally and first in New England, the Lyons recorded their 25th win in just their 29th game, having completed a two-game season sweep over the Hawks. Roger Williams evened its record at 13-13-1.
Wheaton racked up 15 hits while reaching double-figure runs for the 15th time, as junior Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover), sophomore Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) and freshman Hal Landers (Salem, NH/Salem) each had three knocks, with Laliberte and Landers plating two runs apiece and Malaguti scoring twice.
Sophomore Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) hit a go-ahead two-run dinger in the fifth and drove in three runs, while freshman Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint John's Prep) launched a fourth-inning solo shot, his team-leading sixth homer of the season.
Senior closer Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) recorded his sixth save of the spring, fanning three batters over 1.2 frames, while sophomore Kevin Calabro (Andover, MA/Andover) collected his fourth win after yielding seven runs with six strikeouts and five walks in 5.1 innings. Senior Jared Barnes (North Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) and junior Jon Shepard (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional) each tossed a scoreless frame in relief.
After yielding four runs in the first, Wheaton left the bases loaded in the second before tying things up with a four-run fourth. Outside of Haugh's one-out homer, the Lyons' remaining runs came with two down, as Laliberte posted a two-run single to right and sophomore Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) had an RBI single.
Munley's single swing of the bat in the fifth gave the Lyons the lead for good, a 6-4 edge, while Landers pushed another run across in the frame. During the sixth, senior Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) extended his hitting streak to a team-high 13 games in singling home Laliberte. Two batters later, Munley brought home Wheaton's ninth run.
Simmons set down the only two batters he faced in the eighth before retiring three of four in the ninth to close things out. Freshman Sean Scanlon (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial) was saddled with the loss in relief, allowing three earned runs and three hits in one inning.
The Lyons can lock up their 10th New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title tomorrow at Babson College. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
