Women's Lacrosse (5-5, 1-1) Falls Twice Against NESCAC Foes, Grant Tallies 100th Point
The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team stepped out of league play and went 0-2 last week, dropping a pair of home games to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) competitors. The Lyons slipped by a 14-6 final against Amherst College, which received votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, on Tuesday before dropping a 19-7 decision on Thursday versus Tufts University, the nation's seventh-ranked team. During the week, senior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) reached the 100-point plateau for her career.
Wheaton trailed just 3-2 against Amherst more than 11 minutes into the contest before coming up short. Senior Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) led the Lyons with two goals, while four others had one marker apiece. Grant notched two assists, while sophomore Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) recorded 11 stops in net.
The Lyons cut an early seven-goal deficit to four late in the first half versus Tufts before the Jumbos pulled away. Thornton notched a hat trick, Grant had two goals and an assist, and Marcellino made 14 saves, including seven in each half.
Thornton is seventh in program history in career assists (38) and stands ninth in draw controls (89), while her 15 helpers this year are tied for seventh in a season at Wheaton and are the most by a Lyon since 2004. Senior Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) is 10th in draw controls (78). Grant has 103 career points in 53 games, while Thornton has 96 points in 59 games.
