Weekly Lyon Update: Men's Tennis

Men's Tennis (8-5, 2-1) Splits Pair at Home, Moves to 8-2 in Most Recent 10 Matches

The Wheaton College men's tennis team went 1-1 last week, including knocking off visiting Union College, 7-2 on Friday. The Lyons also dropped a 7-2 decision against visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which has won each of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference's (NEWMAC) 10 tournament crowns and was ranked 12th in the Northeast region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Since an 0-3 start, the Lyons are 8-2, as the underclassmen have combined for 34 of the team's 49 singles wins this year and had a hand in and 17 of 22 doubles victories.

Against the Engineers, junior James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Neall Oliver (Portland, ME/Deering) notched a 9-8 victory in the top doubles position, but senior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and junior Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) fell by the narrowest of margins, 9-8 in the second slot. During singles action, Hudgins picked up a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in the third position for Wheaton's lone victory.

The Lyons overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles against Union by winning all six singles matches. Sophomores Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) notched Wheaton's lone doubles victory before Altman, Hudgins, Krantz, Little, Oliver and sophomore Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) each won singles matches in straight sets.
